There are two main groups of Starzewski in Poland. One is the Wielki Polska group more associated with Poland proper. The other is more closely associated with Wolyn, Galicia and Lwow (Lviv/Lemberg) provinces also known as the Kresy or Eastern Borderlands (today Western Ukraine) which is the one my family is from. While the names are the same genetic testing has shown that while we have a similar history there is considerable genetic distance between the two families. Wielki group is "I2" haplogroup while the eastern group is "J2". However this is based on a very limited sample.
Never the less, both families are recognized as members of the Ostoja clan and claim heritage to Stibor Stiboricz.
