The Tölpus name is Estonian, first given as "Tölpius" to Jakob, son of Jaan or Karel, grandson of Jürri and great grandson of Seppa Tolbi Jacob of Viru-Nigula parish. The first and only record of "Tölpius" occurred when Jakob married Maria Roiken on 26 January 1836. Since then, the family name has always been written as Tölpus, meaning in English the state of being dock-tailed, bobtailed, crop-haired or truncated, bluntness or (sigh) dullness, stupidity. Tölpus originally entered the Estonian language from German.
