IAJGS Conference Boston 2013

I'm hoping that I'll be settled in at work by then and can attend. I'll probably reserve a hotel room, in case.

Missing it and you all by 2 weeks! I will be in Boston July 19-23, then NYC July 23 - 28. Really pity!

Sorry but Boston is kind of far away

I get to Israel all the time Rafi :) Actually I'm supposed to be in Israel at the end of April, but with work cannot make it.

I booked a room and registered. Still need to arrange with my wife (the genealogy widow) so I can get away.

I will probably be there. Missed last years in Paris and the year before in Washington. Washington's was due to an illness that cropped up about 3 months before. I am now completely over that painful illness.

Not quite sure how I am going to break the news of the conference to my husband when he returns from South Africa....

This sounds more and more exciting every day as Geni curators make plans to attend. I loved the first conference I attended, mostly frankly for the SIG lunch talks and birds of a feather sessions. And for meeting people who I continue to have a relationship with. It's what got me to sign up to go to Lithuania last year.

This year should be even better because the Ukrainian SIG is very active with new webpages for kehilot such as that of my husband's grandfather - Novopoltavka in Kherson. I hope very much that they will work on Volhynia too and I would have volunteered to be the leader for my great grandparents' hometown of Bilogorodka.

Each of the SIGs and the experts have such amazing and deep knowledge. Even if you only attend once, it's really worth it. I also bought the audio of the talks from Washington since I spent a lot of time networking and didn't attend all the talks.

I can only wish. :-(

Originally 2014 was Israel but I gather since so much data is in data centers in SLC, they rescheduled Israel.

Israel was not able to do it on their own, as the current leadership of the IGS could not put it on. This is why Salt Lake City is in their place.

I booked a room too,and I'll be there unless it's at the same time as my son in Cleveland has his vacation. I'm hoping to meet Lederer cousins in the Boston area who i only know from e-mails.

BTW, Geni experts can still participate via Skype, even if they are unable to make the conference! So let us know your areas of expertise that you wish to share and the times you will be available, and we will program you in during the conference! :)

For those of us not Curators, not presenting -- might the Conference still be of interest?

Lois, I attended the conference two years ago. If you want to write me email here or on my personal email I can tell you my experience. It was very important for me in terms of background, network, and a deep introduction into Jewish genealogy. The lunch SIG speakers and discussion were amazing. I met a lot of people I needed to meet. It was my first time and I was only two years into doing genealogy on my father's side of the family (Lithuania and Ukraine) and my husband's family (Southern Ukraine and Courland). I recommend people to go to at least one of these, as well as join several relevant Jewish Gen Special Interest Groups (SIGs).

Absolutely all Jewish genealogists should attend. I've been to several. You attend the lectures that interest you and in between meet people and talk genealogy. What could be more fun? :-)

I am very interested in Skyping in, Adam. How can one do this? Although the time difference may be a problem for me - Boston is 6 hours ahead of Hawaii in summer.

Re overseas IAJGS conferences. They try to give a few years inbetween. for overseas conferences. Since last year was in Paris, this year in Boston, it was too soon for another non-US based event. non-US based events are much smaller than the US events. So they generally do Israel every two or three years, and SLC every two or three years, and fit the others around it. I've been going to the events for some 20 years. Re Israel, there are now two major Israel gen organizations, it is not just IGS anymore, so there are real considerations with two major groups. I was president of what is now IGRA (it was JFRA) for several years. But the politics of the two groups were very different. It could take a few years just to explain that to people not familiar with the events on the ground :-)
