About Abraham Eastridge Estes, Sr

The following is taken from: http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~myfriendsthelambs2/genealogy/part1/o...

Generation 6. Abraham Estes Abraham Estes, son of Sylvester Estes and Ellen Martin, was born in 1647, in Nonington, Kent County, England. Abraham's baptism record does not survive, however he was mentioned in his mother's will.

He was a linen weaver at Sandwich, Kent, by 1672. He married Ann Burton (a widow) of 29 December 1672, at Worth, Kent. She died about 1674.

Abraham emigrated to the British colonies in North America, arriving before 1682. On 20 April 1682 Lucy Keeling claimed headright for Abraham and 5 others, their passage to Virginia having previously been arranged and paid for by her deceased father, Thorowgood Keeling. Thorowgood died 8/1679, so it is likely Abraham either arrived or his passage had been arranged prior to this. It was a common practice for wealthy residents in the America's to sponsor emigrants, who would then serve an indenture to pay off the cost of the voyage. The typical indenture lasted seven years, after which the emigrant would be free to marry and obtain his own property. He was married/2 on 29 December 1692, in St. Steven’s Parish, King and Queen County, Virginia, to Barbara Brock, who was born between 1662 and 1667, daughter of Robert Brock, (St Stephens Parish, Virginia Colony) now King & Queen County, Virginia.

Since Abraham was still in England by the start of 1673 and was a "freeman" in Virginia by 1683, it is likely he voyaged to the America's around 1674/1675. According to an unsourced claim, Abraham arrived on the "Vana". It has been speculated that his first wife, Ann Burton, died enroute to Virginia, tho' there is no evidence.

"The following contribution to 'Estes Trails', October 1981 by Ernest Ests of New Orleans, LA: 'Abraham Easter (Estes) Emigrant: Captain Thorogood Keeling brought in Abraham Estes to Lower Norfolk Parish of Lyndhaven on 20 April 1682 (this was in Old Westmoreland County). Also it was stated in these papers that Abraham wed Barbara Brock, daughter of Robert Brock. See "Early Virginia Immigrants" in Library."

In 1683 he was living in New Kent County, Virginia, before settling in the parish of St Stephen's, King and Queen County, Virginia. In 1683 he was a signatory of a petition whilst in St. Stephen's Parish. In 1704 he paid quit rent on 200 acres in King and Queen County.

Abraham made a will 21 November 1720, in King and Queen County, Virginia, leaving his estate to his wife, Barbara. Barbara made her will 21 November 1720, leaving part of the estate to several of her children and the remainder to Elisha Estes and Thomas Poor and wife Susanna, for the raising of Moses and Barbara, who upon their parents death's would be raised by Thomas and Susanna Poor.

VA Land Office Records, Book 13, pg. 379 Sep 8, 1728, Abraham Estes of King and Queen Co., received a patent for 500 acres being on S. side of the Middle River at the great mountains in Spotsylvania Co., beginning at Henry Madison's corner tree, adjoining the land of sd. In 1704 he paid quit rent on 200 acres in King and Queen County. Abraham died 21/11/1720, in King and Queen County, Virginia, leaving his estate to his wife, Barbara. Barbara made her will 25/11/1720, leaving part of the estate to several of her children and the remainder to Elisha Estes and Thomas Poor and wife Susanna, for the raising of Moses and Barbara, who upon their parents' deaths were raised by Thomas and Susanna Poor. Barbara's maiden name is a matter of some dispute. She is generally given as Barbara Brock, although whether this is her maiden name or from a previous marriage is uncertain. Brock genealogies do list a Barbara born about 1670 and the d/o Robert Brock. Whether this is the one who married Abraham is another matter.

From "The Estes Family" by Woodie B. Parrott, pub. in the Greene County Record (VA). May 17, 1973:

"The apparent progenitor of the Estes family of Orange, Madison and Greene counties was Abraham Estes, Sr. He was born in 1662 and as proven by a Spottsylvania County Deed, he resided in King and Queen County. His wife's name was Barbara, although her maiden name is not known. The children of Abraham Estes, Sr. by his first marriage were Samuel, Thomas, Richard, Robert, and Abraham Estes, Jr. By his second marriage, he had issue including John, Moses, Elisha, and Barbara."

From: Cary-Estes Genealogy, (p.99) by Mary Folk Webb and Patrick Mann Estes, 1939:

"Abraham Estes owned 200 acres of land in King and Queen County [VA] in 1704 ("The Planters of Colonial Virginia," by Thomas J. Wertenbaker. A true account of the Lands in King and Queen County in1704); d. Nov. 21, 1720 (Amelia File Box, May Court 1785); md. Barbara--.

P. 126, Cary-Estes Genealogy: letter to Mrs. Webb from Blanche Adams Chapman: ..." I am also sorry that the research in the land office gave no earlier information of the Abraham Estes of King and Queen County. He, evidently, bought of "married" the land he paid tax on in 1704..." P. 126, Cary-Estes Genealogy: another letter to Mrs. Webb from Blanche Adams Chapman: I fear you will never find any further clues to the children of Abraham Estes, Sr., beyond those certainly proven by the records from land office. The loss of King and Queen records will prevent your ever knowing definitely which are sons and which grandsons. I am hoping Mrs. Nugent's next book of Land Patents will show when Abraham Estes came and who brought him in. This seems your only hope, to learn anything of him, unless some English boat list gives him..." In a footnote, R.A. Stewart wrote: "I have had access to the proofsheets of Mrs. Nugent's Vol. II, but found no further mention of Abraham Estes" (p. 127).

From the "Journals of the House of Burgesses of Virginia", Vol.1752-58, p. 9:

"Petition of Abraham Este for a Runaway negroe who hath runaway and was found in the woods, was offered to the House and the question being put that the said Petition be received. It passed in the negative." Abraham's children were: Abraham, Jr. (born abt. 1697); Samuel,Thomas, Richard, Robert, John, Moses, Elisha (born 1699); and Barbara (died at age 16).
