About Anna E Barton

Obituary: Mrs. Anna Rutter Barton, 84, widow of John C. Barton, died at 11 p.m., Tuesday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Amos R. Good, 74 Diller Avenue, this borough, where she resided, of arterio sclerosis, after a long illness.

She was a member of the New Holland Lutheran church and the Kings' Daughters, of New Holland.

She was a daughter of the late Joseph and Harriet Rutter, of New Holland. She was educated in the public schools and attended a teachers' preparatory school operated by Miss Anna Brubaker, conducted at one time in the residence now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Z. Martin.

Mrs. Barton was assistant to Miss Brubaker, when the former was 14 years old. She was only 18 when she took a position as teacher in Earl Township, in which she served at Red Well and Maple Grove for a total of eleven years.

Her teaching career then turned to the borough schools in which she served with outstanding success for a period of 28 years, of which 5 were spent in what was then called the grammar school, and 23 years in the secondary school of this place.

She taught 4th grade until retired by the school system.

Her success as a teacher was closely paralleled by that she attained as a member of the New Holland School Board, having served for 11 years in that capacity. She witnessed the school's metamorphosis from a four-room school to a first-class elementary high school.

Funeral service will be held from the Esbenshade funeral parlors, 145 West Main street, this borough, on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be made in the New Holland United Brethren cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral parlors, this (Friday) evening from 7 to 9. [New Holland Clarion, Lancaster Co, Pa, Friday, June 5, 1942,pg.1; www.lancasterhistory.org/]
