"Arnold was the oldest son of Paulus and Gertrude, baptized 9 June 1669 at the Reformed Church, Kaldenkirchen, Germany.... He married Gertrude Conrads 24 June 1691 in the Reformed Church in Krefeld, Germany. Gertrut probably died before Arnold emigrated to Pennsylvania as there is no mention of her in any records after the marriage in Krefeld. Arnold is believed to have come to America with his parent and married Rebecca. His wife's last name is variously reported as Nuysum, Nuzam, and Schulzer, but there is no known documentation for any of these names." [1]

ARNOLD b. Bef. 1669

Arnold Kuster came to Germantown with his parents. He had married Gertrude Conrads/Conratz in Kaldenkirchen, but it is unknown exactly where and when she died. Conrad Kuster is probably her son. After Gertrude's death, Arnold married Rebecca, and they are the ancestors of General George Armstrong Custer. In 1699, Arnold purchased Lot 6 in Germantown from Paul Engel. This lot was next door to Cornelius Dewees, who was married to Arnold's sister, Margaret. In 1702, he was asked to be a committeeman of Germantown, but declined, because of religious objection to taking an oath in court. Arnold and his brother, Hermanus, were active Mennonites in PA. Between 1703 and 1708, a log church was builtcfor the Mennonites, and Arnold, Hermanus, and Elizabeth Kuster were members.

Arnold was a bricklayer. In 1702, Arnold was on a list as having sent his children to a school in Germantown called Friends School, taught by Francis Daniel Pastorius. After 1714, Arnold moved to western Philadelphia Co., an area now Berks Co., where he bought 316 acres in Manatawney Tract of New Hanover Tp., for his children.

Arnold died in 1739 in Hanover Tp., Philadelphia Co., PA, and was buried in the Manatawney Cemetery (Mennonite). Letters of Administration were granted to his brother, Hermanus, Dec. 22, 1739.

GEDCOM Note

Families from Kaldenkirchen were among the earliest emigrants to Pennsylvania. In 1683 thirteen German families emigrated on the ship Concord sailing from Rotterdam to Philadelphia. These families were members of the Religious Society of Friends (aka "Quakers") and Mennonites. Most were from the town of Krefeld, but some were from Kaldenkirchen. These thirteen families founded Germantown.[

Subsequent emigrants from Kaldenkirchen to Germantown included Paulus and Gertrude Kuster, the great-great-great-great-grandparents of U.S. Army colonel George Armstrong Custer.
