Served in the 5th Virginia Regiment as E

Served in the 5th Virginia Regiment as Ensign & Lt under George Washington from the VA magazine of history vol2 pg250 relinquished the rights to his land to William Arthur of Wilkes County Ga There are two marriage dates for this couple. the one shown and 26 May 1755 William Arthur was Surety on this listed marriage. After the death or before the death of Barnabus, his family has moved to Georgia. Son Mathew sells 504 acres on Flat creek. Mathew is listed as resident of Georgia. Rev war patriot, There apparently were two Barnabuses. Look at the other Barnabus who was here about the same time and you will see a cross link on Marriages. This Barnabus was supposed to be married to Martha Talbot and Nancy Williamson. The other Barnabus was supposed to be married to Elizabeth and Nancy Williamson. One or the other is incorrect as far as second wife, but is likely OK as a person who exists.

According to Will of Barnabas (4th child

According to Will of Barnabas (4th child of John & Rebecca of Goose creek) his wife was Nancy; from Bedford Cnty Deeds we find a Barnabas with a wife named Elizabeth who was still living in 1802. It is believed by some that Barnabus married 2nd to Nancy Williamson, 3 Jan 1811 as per marriage rec of Bedford Cnty Va. Others have stated that his second wife was Nancy Clayton. Nor proof either claims, so all that can be stated for sure is that Barnabas was married first to Elizabeth who died after 1802 and them married second to Nancy. Since there are numerous Barnabas Arthurs around Bedford, Campbell, and Franklin Counties at the same time, making it very difficult.

Life Sketch

In the name of God Amen, I Barnabas Arthur of the county of Bedford being weak in body but of sound and disposing memory. Item: I give and bequeath unto my wife Nancy one third part of my whole estate for and during the term of natural life, of which then it is my will that the tract of land I now live do constitute a part. Item: I bequeath unto my grandsons James Maxey and Barnabas Maxey the sum of five pounds each to be their full share of my estate. Item: In consequence of long and faithful service of my negro man George and my negro woman Betty, it is my desire that they be emancipated, whenever the laws of this state will allow it and they have the tract of land I purchased of Benjamin Williamson for and during the term of their natural lives; to live upon and maintain their idiot daughter Amy and until they can be so emancipated it is my will that they shall live upon said land and maintain their said daughter and have all the profits of their labor, under the direction of my son Lewis and moreover that they be furnished with one year provision out of my estate whenever they leave it in consequence of this article and the said negroes are not to be considered or appraised as part of my estate. Item: The residue of my estate both real and personal, I give and bequeath in equal shares unto my children John Arthur, William Arthur, Lewis Arthur, Barnabas Arthur, Caleb Arthur, Elizabeth Bowles, Fanny Pratt, Lucy Greer, and the children of Rhody White, deceased, my Staunton tract of land being first sold for the purpose of said division. I request my friends John Arthur and Samuel Clayton to act as my Executors of this my last will and testament.

Barnabas signed by his mark. The will was probated 20 Apr 1815.
