About Bernhard Strakosch

Born Oct 5, 1836, Bučovice near Brno; Haus #15. Czech Jewish Registers, Bučovice Births, Image 40 of 82.

Bernhard Strakosch, in Wien, donated to a fund for a poor widow; mentioned in Die Neuzeit of Aug. 28, 1863.

Married May 31, 1866 in Wien:

  • Bernhard, "kaufmann aus Butschowitz in Mähren," geb. 5 Oct. 1836. Father: Markus. Mother: Babette geb. Königsgarten.
  • Henriette, "aus Göding in Mähren, geb. 17 April 1847." Father: David Leopold Weller, kaufmann. Mother: Babette geb. Stefansky.

Married in Wien though they lived in Brno: Numerative #638, Volume Tempelgasse: Strakosch, Bernhard & Weller, Henriette. Image #153 of 311 at FamilySearch.org's 02. Bezirk (Leopoldstadt), Trauungsbücher, Trauungsbuch A 1860-1871.

The marriage was announced in Die Neuzeit, June 1, 1866, p. 11 and in Mährische Zeitung (Morawske Nowiny), July 26, 1866, p. 4. Mentions "Firmy J. & B. Strakosch." In Czech.

Was a partner with his brother Ignatz Strakosch in the firm J. [I.] & B. Strakosch, in Brno. The firm was referenced re marriage contract of Bernhard Strakosch and Henriette Weller (1866): "Bei der firma: J & B Strakosch, Schaffwollwaarenerzeuger in Brünn, hat David Leopold Weller, Handelsmann in Wien, die zwischen Bernhard Strakosch, öffentlichen Gesellschafter der Firma „J. und B. Strakosch", und der Tochter des genannten DLW, HW, unter Beitritt ihres Vaters geschlossenen Ehepachten ddo. Wien 30 Mai 1866 eintragen lassen," in Wiener Zeitung, Aug. 24, 1866, p. 26. ("For the organization: J & B Strakosch Schaffwollwaarenerzeuger in Brünn, David Leopold Weller, merchant in Vienna between Bernhard Strakosch, public shareholders of the company "J. and B. Strakosch," and the daughter of the said DLW, Henriette Weller, closed under accession of her father's marriage leases ddo. Vienna to register May 30, 1866").

On March 25, 1867, in Brno, the business burned (Prager Abendblatt, page 2): "Factory fire. In Brno on the 25th of March in the morning, the sheepswool factory of Messrs I. and B. Strakosch, together with all the stores and equipment, burned to the ground. [Fabriksbrand.

{GroßBrand} Borgestern (Sunday), early after three o'clock, the inhabitants of the city of Brno were frightened from their sleep by the fire alarm; the whole horizon was darkened. At No. 77, in the Unterzeil, belonging to Messrs. Joseph Bayer and Sons, a fire had broken out in the rear tract, in the sheep-wool factory of Messrs I. & B. Strakosch. The fire-extinguishing teams had to exert their full force in order to save the neighboring buildings in which the fires would have found fuel. The contents, all in flames, had to be left to their fate, and burned down to the ground, so that the damage inflicted upon the company of I. & B. Strakosch, especially with regard to the present business season, is very great. The mayor Dr. Giskra, Vice-Mayor Herlth, police chief commissar for Wolf, had just arrived from Prague, and on the side of the garrison, several chiefs of staff and superintendents, with a division of the crew.

As his granddaughter Gertrude Reif, later recounted it in a talk she gave in 1938 (see in MEDIA), her grandfather's loss of the factory was related to the Austro-Prussian War struggles going on in and around Bohemia (northwestern Czechoslovakia) at the time; she said he was "forced to flee to Austria." (The factory did not make clocks, but did make cloth.) Bernhard been in Vienna when he married, in 1866, but continued to live in Brno until about 1880 (through the births of all three children), and after that in Vienna. A notice in Gerichtshalle (Court Notices) of Oct. 14, 1880 states his firm (and he) were at Dreilausergasse 4, Wien VII.

Per family history, Bernhard Strakosch was "a cobbler." His firm in Vienna was B. Strakosch "& Sohn", producers and wholesalers of shoes; see advertising card in MEDIA. Directory listing in Vienna first appears in Adolph Lehmann's allgemeiner Wohnungs-Anzeiger for 1881, Image #1160. The listing for 1892, Image #1521, fourth listing from bottom, left-hand column, shows him still doing business at Dreilausergasse 4, Wien VII, by now with son Otto Strakosch. Same listing appeared in 1889 as in 1881; those did not mention son Otto Strakosch.

Strakosch shoes were represented in Australia already in the early 1880s by Bernhard Strakosh's company presence at Expositions in the Austria section: The Argus (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia), page 23S.

A first cousin, Julius Strakosch 1845-1886 was also in shoe manufacturing.

Bernhard Strakosch died 1910 at Wien VII, Mariahilferstraße 62 (see the death record, Image #234 of 291, line 1807). [This was his address since at least 1903.]

Zentralfriedhof Cemetery, Vienna:

  • Strakosch Max [died at 18] bur. 08/03/1885 ZENTRALFRIEDHOF I. TOR 5b 13 19

This is not the Bernhard Strakosch (1828-1908) who was with the Hohenauer Zuckerfabrik der Brüder Strakosch (near Brno). That person was a first cousin.

Neue Freie Presse death notice for Bernhard Strakosch 1836-1910 appeared on Oct. 25, 1910. Thanks to genteam.at / Jewish Graves there is a photograph of the grave (see MEDIA).

What became of Schuhfabrik B. Strakosch & Sohn Schuhfabrik [sohn=Otto], founded in 1872, is described in Ökonomie der Arisierung, Vol. 2, by Ulrike Felber, section 2.4.4., available online. The book states the firm B. Strakosch [& Sohn] "operated in Vienna since 1872" and was located at Wien VII, Kaiserstrasse 41. Bernhard Strakosch & Sohn owned the building at that address, per the 1908 Buch der Häuser und Hausbesitzer Wien at DigitalWienBibliotek (7 Bezirk, p. 25; image #42). As early as 1880 Bernhard Strakosh was exhibiting his company's shoes and boots at International Exhibitions such as the one in Melbourne, Australia (see in MEDIA).

In the late 1930s Otto Strakosch still had the factory and gave his great-niece, Brigitta Kanitz, a pair of shoes not long before she emigrated with her family to Holland, then America.

The fate of B. Strakosch & Sohn Schuhfabrik during WW II is discussed in Arisiert [Aryanized]: Eine Spurensuche im gesellschaftlichen Untergrund der Republik. Kremayer & Scheriau. Wien, Irene Etzersdorfer (1995) in a chapter on Bernhard Strakosch's son, Otto Strakosch.

The company continued after World War II and is cited as the founding organization behind today's Legero Footwear in Austria. The company's direct descendant is Legero Footwear in Austria (Graz): www.legero.at and LEGERO on Facebook.

In English: Our shoe story starts with Bernhard Strakosch, of the "footwear manufacturer B. Strakosch". He was permitted to register with the Vienna Commercial Court on 20 September 1872. His products are described as "good Kommerzware, gentlemen's and ladies shoes in nailed, by-needle and double stitched design " .
