About Capt Gerald Wynter Blathwayt

Gerald's father was Mr Arthur P Blathwayt of Northwood Grange, Middlesex. Gerald was commissioned into the Royal garrison Artillery in 1898 and was transferred to the Royal Field Artillery at the outbreak of the Boer War. In February 1914 he was posted to 56th Battery, 44th Brigade Royal Field Artillery and deployed with this unit to France in August 1914. He was killed in action on 14th September 1914 the first day of Battle of the Aisne and was initially buried in the gardens of the Chateau Verneuil. After the war his body was re-buried in the Vendresse British Cemetery, France. His death was reported in the Gloucestershire echo on 21st September 1914 where it was stated that his family were well known in the Dyrham, Glos, area and members of that family had close residential connections with Cheltenham. A Gerald Winter Blathwayt is recorded in the 1918 Cheltenham Street Directory as residing at !! St George's Road, Cheltenham. Captain Blathwayt is not commemorated on any memorial in Cheltenham or the local area.
