James was born at Knockbracken, Parish of Drumbo, County Down, Ireland, in 1700. He married Elizabeth McQuoid (1705-1777) in 1725, and moved to Gabrate, Parish of Graba, near Canningburn, Mill in County Down. He came to America in 1734 on "The Good Intent" and soon settled in Williamsburg township, South Carolina.

--Witherspoon, Joseph B. The History and Genealogy of the Witherspoon Family (1400-1987). Fort Worth, Tex: Miran Publishers, 1988. Print. p. 47. k3

His grandchildren Janet Witherspoon and Thomas Witherspoon married one another.

He was the 3rd child of John and Janet/Jennett Witherspoon to live to adulthood and arrived from Northern Ireland with family into Charleston, S. C. in 1734.

After his marriage in Northern Ireland, he lived about 9 years in the Parish of Graba near Canningburn Mills. They then came with family (his father & others; his mother died at sea on the trip over) to the USA and lived at the Bluff near Kingstree until 1749; & then they moved to a 300 acre place situated between the Lower Bridge on Black River and Murray's Ferry on the Santee & built 2 story home (Thorntree) which still stands renovated as a historic entity in Kingstree, S. C.
