About Col. John Henry

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Henry-256

John Henry, born about 1704, was the son of Alexander (or Patrick) Henry and Jean Robertson of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The exact year and location of his birth is unknown, so the year is an estimate based on his attendance at Kings College. His sister Isabel was born in 1706 in Aberdour Parish, in Aberdeenshire, so it's possible John was born there as well.

Around the age of fifteen, John attended Kings College at Aberdeen University on a scholarship. He attended for four years, but didn't earn his degree.[1]

John emigrated to Virginia, arriving in February of 1727 and lived at the home of Col. John Syme, "a close friend of his family back in Aberdeen."[1] He was a friend of Robert Dinwiddie, who became Governor of Virginia in 1752, and it is said Henry brought a letter of introduction from him to Col. John Syme. It is thought that the families of Henry and Syme were connected in Scotland and that this fact caused John Henry to make his way to Hanover on his arrival in Virginia, where he soon became domesticated in the family of Colonel Syme. [2]

His brother, Rev. Patrick Henry, an Episcopalian minister, soon followed him to Virginia in April, 1733. The two brothers were very much attached to each other and ever afterwards lived not far apart. They were cousins of David Henry, who went from Scotland to London at the age of fourteen, and became a journeyman printer in the same office with Benjamin Franklin. He married a sister of Edward Cave, the found of the "Gentleman's Magazine," in London.

Family

From The Henry Genealogy: Ref. to Sarah Winston and Descendants (With 2 Sons, and 7 Daughters). (Henry Genealogy)

Patrick Henry's father, he attended King's College of Aberdeen University on scholarship from 1720 to 1724. By 1727 he had settled in Hanover County. He married Sarah Winston Syme. The couple had eleven children together. Two children died at young ages leaving two sons and seven daughters in the family. They moved to Mount Brilliant from Studley about 1748. At one point he established a store for his sons. The store apparently was not a success because of his benevolence, John Henry being a better neighbor than businessman.

From https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Henry-256

John and Sarah had the following children:

  1. Mary Henry 1732–?, married Luke Bowyer.[7][8][9]
  2. William Henry 1734–1784, married Alice Taylor[3][10]
  3. Patrick Henry 1736–1799[3][10]
  4. Anne Henry 1738–1790, married Col. William Christian.[7][8][9]
  5. Jane Henry 1738–1819, married Col. Samuel Meredith[7][11][12]
  6. Susannah Henry 1742–1831, married Gen. Thomas Madison[7][8][13]
  7. Lucy Henry 1743–1826, married Col. Valentine Wood[7][14]
  8. Elizabeth Henry 1749–1825, married (1) Gen. William Campbell, married (2) Gen. William Russell[15]
  9. Sarah Henry, married Thomas Thomas[7][13]

NOTE: Other than two daughters who died in 1769, the established genealogies relate the above nine children only. As yet, there is no documentation of additional children.
