About Dea. Joseph Mygatt

Biographical Summary:

Joseph Mygatt came in the "Griffin," in 1633, with Cotton and Hooker (to whom he was very close); settled in Cambridge; freeman, Massachusetts, May 6, 1635; one of the original proprietors of Hartford; his home-lot in 1639 was near the junction of what is now Washington and Lafayette Streets. He was townsman 1642, 1647, 1652, 1660, and held other offices, deputy, 1658; also a deacon of the First Church; he was licensed to "sell strong liquors by retail," May 1656. His wife's name was Ann; she was born about 1602, aged about 65 in October 1667, and her husband testified in Oct. 1666, that he was age 70, so born about 1596. He died December 7, 1680; inventory £368.11. 6. His widow died in 1686. Their house was on a hill, where Trinity College is today. BTW, his surname, according to at least one record (dated 1635), it appears to have been pronounced "Maggot". There were Maggatts in Mountnessing, Essex (Mary Maggatt of Mountnessing married John Norrys, gen. possibly in London on 20 July 1573). Elizabeth Maggott, the widow of Thomas Maggott and of Christchurch, London, married John Bruen of Christchurch, London (he was a butcher) on 13 June 1625 at St. Faith, London.

Children:

i. Jacob, born 1633; married about 1654 or 1655, Sarah, daughter of William Whiting, of Hartford; the time of his death is unknown; his wife married (2) John King, of Northampton; died about 1704. His only son, Joseph, married Sarah, daughter of Lieutenant Robert Webster, 15 Nov., 1677; they had 9 children, and after that time the name is frequently met with on the Hartford records,

ii. Mary, born 1637; married September 20,1 1657, John Deming, Jun., of Wethersfield.
