About Henrietta Douglas, Countess of Annandale

The fact that there were two Henrietta Douglas women, close to the same age and born approximately the same time, has led to a lot of confusion.

Lady Henrietta Douglas was born circa 1633.2 She was the daughter of William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Douglas and Lady Mary Gordon.1 A contract for the marriage of Lady Henrietta Douglas and James Johnstone, 1st Earl of Annandale and Hartfell was signed on 29 May 1645.1,2 She died on 1 June 1673.1

From after 29 May 1645, her married name became Johnstone. After her marriage, Lady Henrietta Douglas was styled as Countess of Hartfell on 1 October 1653. After her marriage, Lady Henrietta Douglas was styled as Countess of Annandale and Hartfell on 13 February 1660/61.

James [Johnstone], 2nd Earl of Hartfell later 1st Earl of Annandale and Hartfell, PC 1st son and heir of James [Johnstone], 1st Earl of Hartfell, by his first wife Lady Margaret Douglas, 1st dau. of William [Douglas], 1st Earl of Queensberry born 1625, died 17 Jul 1672.

The 11 children (4 sons, 7 daughters) of James Johnstone, 1st Earl of Annandale and Hartfell and Lady Henrietta Douglas were:

Maj-Gen Hon John Johnstone, a professional soldier, led the Jacobite mutiny of the Royal Scots Regiment 1689, Colonel in the Jacobite and French armies, commanded the Royal Saxon Army, commanded the Polish Cavalry Division (b. 3 Sep 1665; dspm. 29 Dec 1714), mar. 19 Jun 1713 Countess Catherine Christine von Ahlefeldt (mar. (2) 1722 Duke of Glucksburg; dsps. 1726), 1st dau. of Count Detler Sievert von Ahlefeldt, and had issue
  • 4. Hon George Johnstone (b. 21 Jun 1667; d. 10 May 1674)
  • 1. Lady Mary Johnstone (b. 31 Jan 1651/2; d. 8 Apr 1681), mar. 8 Mar 1670 as his first wife William [Lindsay], 18th Earl of Crawford, and had issue
