About Hildis of the Vandals

Hildis Princess of Vandals (-572)

Generations of genealogists have accepted Hildis as a daughter of Hilderic, King of the Vandals in Africa. She has been seen, therefore, as a gateway ancestor to the Roman Imperial dynasty of Theodosius. However, this highly improbable descent is not supported by any contemporary reference. Moreover, the historical facts argue against the connection. Hilderic was deposed by his kinsman Gelimer in 530/31, then in 533 Gelimer himself was defeated by the Byzantine general Belisarius. Hilderic's daughter(s) were captured, along with other members of the Vandal royal family. They then disappear from history. Because of their descent from Valentinian III, they represented a dynastic threat to the Emperor Justinian. They were probably placed in a convent. Finally, religious reasons would have presented a barrier to the marriage of a Vandal princess to a Danish king. Even if Justinian had allowed Hilderic's daughters to marry, the fact that they were Christians would have mandated marriage to Christian princes in the Byzantine sphere of influence. They would not have been married to pagans ruling kingdoms distant from the Empire. Justin Swanström (2010).

Name: Hildis of the VANDALS

  • Suffix: Vandal Princess
  • Title: Vandal Princess
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: Abt 515
  • Death: Abt 572

Note:

  • Sources: RC 240; Kraentzler 1666, 1793.
  • RC: Hildis, Vandal princess, died about 572.
  • K-1666 calls her Hildis and married to Harold Valdarsson. RC says this man was her son. K-1793 calls her Hilda, married to Frode VII. Both these lines have her as the daughter of Hilderic of the Vandals. Will stick with RC. Also Kraentzler's birthdate, 572, is RC's death date.

NOTE: Some authorities give, as her father, Hilderic, King of Vandals, thus opening up the possiblity of a royal Vandals line going back to Genseric, a Vandal who conquered much of Africa about 425-455 AD. This lineage may be sound but needs more work. Hilderic's RIN is 9302. Since this line, going back, was from Simpson Gedcom (looks like it from Kraentzler), will include it--but with a caveat. Incidentally, this Simpson/Kraentzler material had Hildis married to wrong man, two generations up and gave her a c515 birth date. Also, Simpson has the line going clear back to Adam, which is mighty, mighty, mighty iffy. And add mighty many more times.

Her ancestry is found elsewhere on this tree.

Hildis' father was Hilderic Christian Of Vandais and her mother was Amfleda Vandals. Her paternal grandparents were Hunneric Vandals and Eudoric Eudoxia Vandais. She had a sister named Hildu. She was the older of the two children.
