Oral history: He fought in the war, joined his father FJJ Botes at age 14 and was captured at Rietgat just before Christmas in 1901. According to Oupa Japie once captured, they were marched to Pretoria on foot by British soldiers on horses, transported in open cattle wagons (train) to Durban and sent to St Helena on a refurbished coal hulk (research indicated that it could have been the Orient). He returned to South Africa in 1902/3 and was home 4 years after he first joined the war.
Documented history: Anglo-Boer War, POW St Helena, Prisoner number: 26768 Captured at Rietgat on 18/12/1901, St Helena, Camp unknown POW
Note: Appears on page 68 (798) of the Botes Stamregister & Kwartierstaat - however, name is incorrectly transcribed from the marriage certificate and he is incorrectly linked (not the son of) to JA Botes (797)
