BIOGRAPHY
John Dean and his younger brother, Walter, came to Boston in 1637 from Chard in Somerset Co., England. They settled first in Dorchester, later moving to Taunton. John was made a freeman (citizen) of the Plymouth Colony on Dec. 4, 1638, and was one of the first purchasers of land.

An anecdote concerning John, "While out on a hunting excursion alone, he perceived some Indians cautiously approaching through the bushes, evidently with the purpose of capturing or killing him. When they had nearly reached him, the thought suddenly struck him of making it appear as if he were only one of many. This he did by exclaiming loudly, "Rush on, boys, and we'll have them", at the same time firing his gun several times. The Indians fled."
