John Wilcoxson, Jr.

Son of John Willcockson, Sr., and Sarah Boone.

He married Sarah Notson before 1780, in Rowan Co., NC, as some of their children were born there before that year.

So far, there is no proof of Sarah Notson's dates of birth or death.

John Jr. was still in North Carolina, listed on tax lists as late as the 1790 Census with at least three males aged 16 or older.

Mrs. Dorothy Ford Wulfeck, M. A., author of "Wilcoxson and Allied Families (Willcockson, Wilcoxen, Wilcox)" 1958, states that a lineage sheet shows John married to Sarah Notson in 1780, near Lexington, KY. She states she found no marriage record at the time of her book 1958. It is also believed by some that Sarah's maiden name may not have been spelled "Notson."

Grandson, Richmond Rogers Willcockson, author of the above stated marriage date and location, compiled a list of their children, found at the Pennsylvania Historical Society in a drawer of manuscript and typescript files known as the "Meherrin Collection." (This collection is still at the Society, but is no longer under this description.)

John Jr. was on the 1820 Tax Record for Clark Co., KY, and soon settled in Howard Co., MO. He and Sarah were listed in the 1830 Census for Howard County, and died afterwards at "very old ages."

John and Sarah were buried on the "family farm," according to descendant, Miss Eva May Peeler, not far from the Peeler farm. Their grave markers were later trampled by cattle, and their graves plowed by farming. (I have intentionally not entered his wife, Sarah, on Find a Grave, as her data and the date of their marriage is unknown.)

• **************************************************** My two-cents worth: John Willcockson, Sr. built a home in Mocksville, Rowan Co., NC. Gordon Tomlinson wrote in his article: "200-Year-Old House," posted online by The Willcockson Society, that Armand Daniel purchased the house in 1955.

While remodeling, Mr. Daniel found a brick from one of the house's two chimneys with a carved date of "Feb. 2, 1719." Mr. Daniel assumed the date could be John's birth date.

Another source: "Linville families 7 September 2012," notes by Patricia Curl Dowden, gg daughter of Person 3 Alice Bryant:" states that "John Wilcox or John Wilcoxon" was born Feb. 4, 1719 in Berks Co., PA, and was christened 6 Sep. 1720 Berks Co., PA.

Circumstantial evidence indicates that John's parents were George Willcockson and Elizabeth Powell. The couple was married (documented) on "Feb./April 15, 1719," during a Radner Quaker Meeting in Chester Co., PA. George died without a will, and although there were children, there was only one proven child named Mary. Those who presume the relationship of John Sr. to George and Elizabeth, use family associations to show the probability that John Sr. and George and Elizabeth were related.

John Sr. was not a Quaker, as were George and Elizabeth, but was called a "worldling" or "outsider" by the Quakers, when he married Sarah Boone.

Dorothy Ford Wulfeck, M.A., compiler and publisher of "Wilcoxson and Allied Families (Willcockson, Wilcoxen, Wilcox)," privately printed by Commercial Service, Waterbury, Connecticut, 1958, p. 16, includes a letter written by Jeremiah Wilcoxen, grandson of Samuel Willcockson, to Lyman C. Draper, postmarked Canton, Ill. April 18th, 1861, in which he clearly states that his "Great grandfather (John Sr.) was a native of Wales."
