About Joseph Ballinger, Jr.
A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA. DAR Ancestor # A005568
He was the son of Joseph & Charity (Wade) Ballinger.
He married first Sarah Hensley Franklin, 1753. She was the mother of his ten known children. After her death in 1777 he married Tabitha Ballou, 4 Apr 1782, Pittsylvania Co., VA
Joseph Ballinger, [Jr.] wrote his will on 3 February 1802, and it was proved in court on 15 February 1802. He bequeathed to his wife [unnamed] and these children:
(1) son Richard Ballinger
(2) son Achilles Ballinger
(3) son James Ballinger
(4) daughter Peggy Hensley [Ballinger] Gravely
(5) daughter Milly [Ballinger] White
(6) daughter Elizabeth [Ballinger] Johnston
(7) daughter Charity Cox [Ballinger] Torrence
(8) daughter Phebe [Ballinger] Tucker
AMHERST COUNTY COURT ORDERS 9 Mar 1802 Bk. 4, pg. 38-40 gives the inventory of his estate. Valuation 1744pds, 9sh. His Revelutionary War Service includes at "Court of Claims", 18 Mar 1782, in Pittsylvania County for adjusting claims for property taken for public service. Present, James Roberts, John Dix, William Vercher, Reuben Payne, John, Parks, Jeremiah White Esq., Daniel Hankins and William Short. Paid to Joseph Ballinger 40 pds for wagon & gear, 30 pds for 1 horse, 5 yrs old, 30 pds for 1 horse 4 yrs old, 8 pds for 1 sh & saddle & 1/4 bu. of corn, 7 pds 19 sh for 157 lbs of bacon & 1/2 bu corn, for General Greene's army at the battle of Guilford Courthouse.
