About Joseph Porter

A Patriot of the American Revolution for NORTH CAROLINA. DAR Ancestor #: A134660

Joseph Porter and his family were living in Wilkes County when the county was formed from Surry County in 1777. In 1779 Joseph received a land grant containing over 300 acres lying on both sides of Fisher's Creek at the Yadkin River.

Joseph Porter served in the Wilkes County Militia during the American Revolutionary War, and fought at the Battle of King's Mountain, and was paid for services in 1782. He served as a constable, a juror and a bondsman during the latter part of the 1770s and most of the 1780s.

A record, dated 24 Aug 1824 stated that Joseph Porter Sr. died circa 1820 leaving the following children, viz: Joseph, Francis, Lois (wife of Aaron Chamber), James, Sarah (wife of Hezekiah Hall), William, Maugretter (wife of John Arnell), Elizabeth (wife of Elijah Arnell), Mary (wife of William Johnson, since deceased), and Jane (wife of John Gambill).  The paper is signed by John Reynolds and John Rousseau, Executors.  (File C.R. 104.314.3, Wilkes County Court of Equity Minutes, NC Archives).

From Terry Porter, a descendent of Allen: " My family started in S.W. VA, on the reverse slope of the Appalachian Mtns since around 1772, where they first showed up on the tax records. In what is now Grayson Co. VA." "These Porter's were in what is Surry County N.C. by 1755." "By 1810 Joseph and Guinn are gone; Joseph either moved with Guinn or died, though I could find no will or court papers disposing of his property. He did own land. Though I can find no record of the deed in the court house. ... The Porters ... are 100% Ulster Scots, or as we say here, Scotch-Irish." In addition, Terry offers impressive "circumstantial evidence" that this Joseph is the father of Allen and Guinn. In 2000, Brenda Phillips indicated that based on various records she believed that Allen, Guinn and Susannah are all children of Joseph. Guinn's grandson, James Knox Porter, wrote in a letter about his ancestors in 1916 that Guinn had a brother named George who was a preacher. Greer Family Tree gives Wilkes Co., NC as place of birth and lists only one sister to Guinn, named Evaline. 1800 US census show Joseph, 1 adult female and 4 children living in Morgan, Wilkes Co., NC.
