There was John Hawkins who died in Ann Arundel County by 17 March 1676. Much information about this family can be found in the minutes of the West River Monthly Meeting, of the Society of Friends. The West River Meetings were in Ann Arundel County. John Hawkins was likely a follower of the Society of Friends since the two men mentioned to oversee his will were members of the Society.

John Hawkins, of Ann Arundel County Maryland, d. 1676, was involved in numerous land transactions in Ann Arundel County and in 1670 he purchased the 100-acre 'Pole Almanack Neck' acreage from William Davis. On the third of February in 1670, this John Hawkins, also known as, John Hawkins "Mariner", made his will naming his children and leaving everything to his wife Mary. He signed his will in his own hand, indicating that he was an educated man for his time. From the will of John Hawkins, Robert W. Bames in his book, Baltimore County Families, 1659-1759, identified his sons as JOHN b. circ 1660; AUGUSTINE b. 1663; JOSEPH, d. 1726; MATTHEW, d. 1705; and THOMAS d. 1715.

John Hawkins and his wife Mary had 6 known children:

  1. Augustine, b. 5 NOV 1663 m Susannah Carr ( from land records and the wills of the brothers filed in Baltimore County)
  2. John b. abt 1665
  3. Joseph b. abt 1668 m Elizabeth Ricaud ( from land records and the wills of the brothers filed in Baltimore County)
  4. Matthew m Mary Parrish ( from land records and the wills of the brothers filed in Baltimore County)
  5. Thomas, b. abt 1670. (From Society of Friends records): “Thom Hawkins, son of Jno. & Mary, of AA Co. married 5th month 30th day 1704 Eliza Giles daughter of Rich'd & Marg't Arndell at Wm. Richardson”
  6. Ann b. abt 1672 (From Society of Friends records): Chas. Gosidge, [Gorsuch] of Balto. Co. son of Jno. & Ann Gosidge of Kingdom of Eng. decd. married 12th month 15th day, 1690 Ann Hawkings, dau. Jno. & Mary Hawkins of AA Co.

Disputed Origins

From Wife of John Hawkins b. abt. 1635 Oct 2001

"I have seen John's wife listed as Hawkins, Foster, Parrish, and Dewes. None of those have proved out for my family line. Today, for the first time, I have seen her name listed as Mary Warner. ...."

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustine_Warner_Sr._. “Besides a son, Augustine Warner Sr. had two known daughters. One married David Cant, the other, Sarah, to Lawrence Towneley, an ancestor of General Robert E. Lee.”

From https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/141443295/mary-townley-hawkins has a biography that lists (but does not show) Mary as child of Augustine Warner and Mary Townely.

But a comment on the page, 15 May 2020, is: “there is NO documentation that this Mary was the daughter of Augustine Warner, this whole bio was copied from an unsourced online tree, complete error, Augustine had only 2 documented children a daughter Sarah, and a son Augustine.”
Additionally, the memorial narrative at her husband (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/141438512/john-hawkins) lists incorrect parents and wife’s parents. We don’t know his parents either (see his Geni profile and attached discussions).
