Mary Kathryne McEwin was born February 1, 1923, in Chicota, Lamar County, Texas, the fifth of ten children and oldest daughter of James Weaver McEwin and Kitty Bell (Lynch) McEwin. She was known as "Kathryne".

She attended public schools in Chicota, Paris Junior College, and East Texas State University (Texas A&M-Commerce), Commerce, TX.

On October 9, 1943, she married Pvt. Robert Ney Crook of Monroe, N.C., at 9 p.m. in the Chicota Methodist Church, Chicota, TX, with the ceremony performed by the Rev. J. M. Simpson, Jr. Kathryne and Robert became the parents of 2 sons, Robert "Bob" Ney, Jr. and Charles David Crook. She was an operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, woman’s page editor of The Paris News, Sixth Grade teacher at First Ward Elementary School, and Counselor at Crockett Middle School, all in Paris, TX.

She taught women’s Sunday school classes for many years at First Baptist Church in Paris. Mrs. Crook was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers’ Sorority, Northeast Texas Counseling Association, Texas Counseling Association, and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Kathryne was a wonderful wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandomother, loyal and supportive sister and aunt. Her hospitality was legendary to all those that knew her as she found it as easy to cook for twenty as for two and her home was a favorite gathering place for her family and friends. They always counted on her for unconditional love, a warm hug, wise advice, and a place to go in times of trouble. She will be greatly missed.

In February 1994, her husband of 50 years, Robert, preceded her in death. By 2016, her family included three grandchildren, Tom, Elizabeth and Daniel; and four great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Emily, Caleb and Laura.

On July 24, 2016, Kathryne (McEwin) Crook, age 93, of Paris, Texas, passed away at Cottonwood Creek Healthcare Community in Richardson, Texas. Funeral services were held in Paris at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 28 at Bright-Holland Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ken Cannon presiding. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery, Section 36-17-04, Paris, Lamar County, Texas.
