About Mary Thomas

It is said that Mary Bishop Taylor had traced her ancestors through her mother, Mary Gregory, to Charlemagne of France.

Mary Gregory, born in 1665, died after 1745, daughter of John Gregory, of old Rappohannock County (now Essex County, Virginia), probably married several times.

Married:

  1. James Taylor (son of John Taylor) on 10 Aug 1682 as his second wife.
  2. Rowland Thomas of Caroline County, Virginia

Children:

  1. Anne Taylor, born January 12, 1685, married about 1704, Edward Eastman.
  2. Elizabeth Taylor, born January 12, 1685, died in infancy.
  3. Mary Taylor, born January 21, 1686, died in infancy.
  4. Mary Taylor, born June 29, 1688, died in 1770, married (1) Henry Pendleton, and (2) Edward Watkins.
  5. Edmund Taylor, b. 05 Jul 1690, m. Sarah Brooking, d. 1750
  6.  John Taylor, born in July 1692, died in infancy.
  7. Elizabeth Taylor, born June 10, 1694. Died young.
  8. John Taylor , born November 18, 1696.

Mary Gregory married James Taylor I in August 1682 - the Erasmus Taylor family Bible records it as 10 Aug 1682.[1] She raised her two young step-children, James Jr and Sarah, and had four surviving children of her own with James Taylor. She may have had as many as four other children with James who did not survive youth.

When James died in 1698, Mary was left with four children between the ages of 2-14. Mary's step-children from James's first wife had left or were soon to leave home - James was 24 and would marry the following year, and Sarah was already married.

She remarried to Rowland Thomas before 11 May 1700. They had three sons.

"Rowland and Mary had 3 sons of their own (????) and Rowland would have helped raise Mary's younger Taylor children. As the husband of the widow, Rowland may have became the administrator of the estate for the Taylor children." [1]
