Mourning Stockton was a daughter of Agnes (nee unknown) and Richard Stockton, Sr., (c.1710-1775) of Albemarle County, Virginia.

Although Mourning's name is sometimes shown as Susannah Mourning Stockton, there is no evidence that is correct. It appears that a researcher wanted Mourning to have a friendlier name and added Susannah.
