About Myrtie Julia Merchant
Myrtie Julia Lyon was born May 13, 1873 to Lucius V. and Julia M. (Ainsworth)Lyon in Brady Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Here she received her and education and grew to adulthood. She was married to Albert Vernon Merchant on November 18, 1896 in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. In 1907, the couple moved to South Dakota and homesteaded in Custer for a number of years. Her husband Albert preceded her in death in 1946. Mrs. Merchant was a teacher in piano and organ, and she was instrumental in organizing Sunday schools in the early settlements near Custer. She was a member of the Custer Community Church while residing in Custer, and took a very active part in the Bible Study Class of the church. She passed away Friday evening, September 24, 1971, in the Rapid City Nursing Home where she had been a resident for the last 12 years, at the age of 98. Survivors include: A son, Vernon of Custer; two daughters: Mrs. Oliver T. (Mary) Johnson of Tacoma, Washington, and Mrs. Lloyd C. (Bernita) Snyder of Rapid City; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter who died in infancy.
