NATHANIEL EMERY b. 8 March 1743/4 Dracut, Middlesex [Haverhill, Essex], Massachusetts; bp. 5 August 1744 Methuen, Essex, Massachusetts;

m. Mrs. PHEBE CLOUGH at Dracut, Massachusetts; m 2nd PATIENCE [-?-]; resided in Anson, Maine

He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War in Capt. Henry Elkin's co. 23 November 1775. In Mar 1777 he volunteered for 3 years under Capt. Joseph 1776 Jenkins in Col. Brewer's Reg. He was transferred to Capt. Sewall's co. of Col. Ebenezer Sprout's Reg. from which he was discharged at the expiration of his term of service. He was in the battle of Hubbardstown, Bemis Heights, the surrender of Burgoyne, the assault and capture of Stony Point and Marmouth, NJ. He was at Valley Forge the winter of 1777-8.

No record of children by either marriage has been found.

Mercer is the south-western town of Somerset County, and lies 12 miles west of Skowhegan. Starks bounds it on the north, Norridgewock and Smithfield on the east, Rome, in Kennebec County, on the south, and New Sharon, in Franklin County, on the west. The Sandy River forms the dividing line on the north-west part of the town for a considerable distance. Bog Pond lies between the middle and the western line of the town, and parallel to the last, for two-thirds the length north and south. Its outlet empties into the Sandy River at the northern line. North Pond at the south-east corner occupies portions of the three towns which join here. It is 3 miles long by 2 wide...
The settlement of Mercer was commenced very soon after the close of the Revolutionary war. If we trust tradition, Nathaniel Emery, a Revolutionary soldier, was the first settler, and emphatically the pioneer of the town. His practice was to fell a few acres of trees, build a log house, sell his improvements to some new comer, and then commence again....
