About Permelia Mecham

Permelia had one sister, Hannah, and her brothers were Amos and Samuel. Her father and brother, Amos, served in the War of 1812. Permelia moved with her parents to Canaan, New Hampshire, where she met Joshua Mecham. They were married in Canaan and became the parents of nine children. They left New Hampshire for New York, then went to Mercer, Erie, Pennsylvania in 1827. In 1836, they heard the Gospel preached by LDS missionaries. Permelia and her husband and four of her sons and their wives joined the LDS Church in 1837. On all of the Church records since that time, their name has been spelled "Mecham." Permelia and her husband started for Nauvoo in 1838, but were stopped by a mob in Quincy where they wanted to cross the Mississippi River. When they finally arrived in Nauvoo, they became personally acquanted with the Prophet Joseph Smith. They did their part in helping to build the city and the temple. They were sealed in the Temple on Christmas Day of 1845. Permelia did the temple work for many of her family before the Saints were driven from their homes.

The Mechams were ill-prepared for the arduous journey. Their journey was slow because they had to stop along the way to secure food. When they reached Bonaparte, Iowa, her husband, Joshua, and one of her granddaughters died from exposure. With the help of friends, Permelia was able to go on and reached the Salt Lake Valley in the fall of 1850.

She was the first of her family to arrive in the valley, so she lived with friends. When her son, Edward, came the following year, she made her home with him in Lehi. She was a courageous woman, a great example to her family, and was much loved by her family. As her other children arrived in the valley, she spent her years living with each family. She lived in many places in the valley-Lehi, Provo, Wallsburg, and Heber. She died at the age of eighty-nine.
