Biography

Phebe Leete was baptized 20 Dec 1585 at Little Eversden, Cambridgeshire, England. She was the daughter of Robert Leete and Alice Grundy.[1]

Phebe married George Parkhurst at Ipswich, Suffolk, England about 1611, or before 1612.[2] George and Phebe Parkhurst of Ipswich are mentioned in the record of their daughter, Elizabeth (Parkhurst) (Hilliard) Merry, in Charles Banks’ The History of Martha’s Vineyard.[3]

Children of George Parkhurst and Phebe Leete

Phebe and George had nine children, all baptized at Ipswich, Suffolk, England:[2][4][5][6]

Concord, MA 26 Jun 1656 Rebecca, bp 27 Sep 1627, d/o Esdras Reed; res Chelmsford; had 5 children (not named) George Parkhurst was born in Ipswich in England and all of his children by Phebe were baptized there. Sometime before 1642, he emigrated to New England, settling in Watertown, Massachusetts. It is not clear if Phebe accompanied him or whether she died in England. In any case, George married a Susanna Simpson in New England and had five more sons with her. In 1655, he petitioned the General Court of Massachusetts to sell a piece of land in his wife's estate in order that he might return to England to aid his wife who had already returned with their five youngest children. He claimed that his wife and children were destitute and that his age was 67 years at that time. He probably left for England soon after 1655 and was buried at St. Lawrence church in Ipswich, England, June 18, 1675. All his older children remained in New England.[2][7][8]

Whether Phebe died in England or in Massachusetts is unknown. What is known is that Phebe had passed away before 1644 when George married his second wife, Susanna Simson in Massachusetts.[9] According to John Brooks Threfall’s Fifty Great Migration Colonists to New England and their Origins, Phebe died before 1641.[2]

Note

Phebe (Phebe "unknown" or Phebe "Mathers") in some early Parkhurst genealogies was the youngest of seven children. She had a sister, Ruthy,[1] wife of Reverend Timothy Dalton, Rector of Woolverstone, which is five miles from Ipswich, England. Timothy Dalton and Ruth Leete were married on 13 June 1615 at Gislingham, Suffolk. Ruth died in New Hampshire without surviving children and left legacies to six Parkhurst children of her sister, Phebe, but nothing to Phebe's children Samuel, John, and Abigail which suggests that they had died young.

Phebe Leete was christened on December 20, 1585 in Little Eversden, Cambridgeshire, England and died about 1643, perhaps in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts. There is no record of her in America; her husband George Parkhurst arrived in Massachusetts likely on 20 June 1637, since other of their family, including his brother-in-law Timothy Dalton and sister-in-law Ruth Leete, Phebe's sister, arrived at that time......Royal descent is treated as worthy of note but "speculative" in Gary Boyd Roberts, "Royal Descents of 900 Immigrants" (2018) page clxxxvi. Roberts refers to her as "undoubtedly a kinswoman of Gov. William Leete of Conn." and states that "she may also share in the Staverton-Dabridgecourt descent outlined herein" --at pages 853-4--from Governor Leete's maternal grandmother, Thomasine Burgoyne, wife of Robert Shute., parents of Anne Shute Leete..

  • George Parkhurst had sons George, Benjamin and Joseph ; and besides a daughter Phebe Arnold, that the following were also his children: Deborah (Smith), Elizabeth (Hilliard, Merry), and Mary (Carter). (1)
  • According to an Ancestry.com tree: Phebe Leete Birth 1549 in Guildford, Surrey, England Death 1589 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England (surely this refers to an earlier Phebe Leete?)
  • Vitals as of 31 December 2012: Birth: circa 1556 Ipswich, Suffolk, England Death: April 24, 1645 MA, England. Changing to Christened December 20, 1585 ,Little Eversden, Cambridgeshire, England. Died before 1643, when George Parkhurst remarried; and perhaps Ipswich, England, as there is no record of Phebe residing in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.
