Rabbi Eliezer Papo, Pele Yoetz

Rabbi Eliezer Papo (1785–1828) was the rabbi of the community of Selestria in Bulgaria. He is famous for writing the Pele Yoetz, a work of musar (ethical) literature which gives advice on how to behave as a Jew in many aspects of life.

He was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia. He moved at the age of 27 to Bulgaria, where he died in 1828.

One of his noted works is Beit Tefillah, which is filled with many different prayers for specific situations, including one for the welfare of the Jewish people. A Ladino edition was published in the 1860s, and a Hebrew version was printed in Jerusalem in 1968 (There were some additional, newer printings since).

His grave is up to the present day a focus of pilgrimage by observant Jews, some of whom fly especially from Israel and even from Latin America to Bulgaria for that purpose

Rabbi Eliezer Papo, Pele Yoetz

(1785-1824)

Rabbi Eliezer Papo was a major exponent of the musar tradition. Born in Sarajevo in 1785, Rabbi Papo became an outstanding rabbinic scholar, deeply devoted to piety and spirituality. He authored books of halakhah, homiletics, and musar, and was profoundly committed to kabbalah as well. Rabbi Papo served as rabbi of the community of Selestria (Bulgaria). He died in 1824 at the age of forty-one.

In spite of the brevity of his life, Rabbi Papo achieved remarkable depth and breadth in his rabbinic scholarship, and left to posterity a significant literary legacy. It may be said that Rabbi Papo, in the early nineteenth century, was the exemplary spokesman of the Sephardic musar tradition of the eighteenth century.

Rabbi Papo stressed the need for sincere piety and saintliness. He generally felt that Jews should devote themselves to fulfilling G-d’s commandments, without worrying too much about the problems of this world. It was the world-to-come which has ultimate value; it was that goal to which Jews should direct their lives.

His attitude was one of acceptance: whatever happened was for the best since it was G-d’s will. Suffering and adversity were to be received with equanimity; they provided opportunities to demonstrate true faith in G-d and to repent.

Rabbi Papo taught that it was wrong to be overly concerned with earning a livelihood. To be sure, one had to work for a living, not relying on a miracle to sustain him and his family. But income is determined by G-d. If G-d wants someone to be poor, he will be poor no matter how hard he works. And if G-d wants him to be rich, he will be rich even if he does not work hard. We are all obliged to devote some time to making our living but we must realize that our level of success is determined by G-d.

Rabbi Papo stressed that one must have faith in the words of the sages, submitting to their authority, and indeed, practicing intellectual subservience to anyone greater than oneself. It is proper not to speak with definitive certainty, but to be open to the possibility that others may have more understanding of truth.

Rabbi Papo advocated a tradition-bound, static Judaism. He called for a life of piety and acceptance of G-d. He demanded total allegiance to rabbinic tradition, stressed the need to live according to traditional patterns and preferred the traditionalism of Moslem lands to the modernity of Europe. His ultimate focus was not on life in this world, but on the world to come.

Bulgarian rabbi and author; born in Sarajevo, Bosnia; died in 1824. He held the office of rabbi in Silistria, Bulgaria, till his death. He led a religious life, taking little food, and restraining himself from every kind of pleasure; hence he was surnamed "the Saint" ("ha-Kadosh").

Papo was the author of the following works: "Pele Yo'etz," rules of morality, in alphabetical order, in two parts (Constantinople, 1824; Bucharest, 1860); "Elef ha-Magen" (Salonica, 1828), containing sermons in the order of the sections of the Pentateuch; "Ḥesed la-Alafim" (ib. 1836), treating of the precepts of the Shulḥan 'Aruk, Oraḥ Ḥayyim, and published by his son Judah Papo. Several of his works remain in manuscript.

הרב אליעזר יצחק פאפו - (1770 - 1828 יש מחלוקת על שנת לידתו ויש הקובעים אותה ב-1785). משנת 1819 ועד מותו רבה של הקהילה הספרדית של סיליסטרה שבבולגריה, מחבר "פלא יועץ". יליד סרייבו שבבוסניה, אז חלק מן האימפריה העות'מאנית.

כבר בגיל צעיר עסק פאפו בפרשנות ופלפול בתלמוד וחיבר כתבים על כך.

רבי אליעזר פאפו נודע בספרו "פלא יועץ", שהוא ספר מוסר. הספר בנוי מפרקים (רובם קצרים) שכל אחד מדבר על נושא שונה. הפרקים מסודרים לפי סדר האלפבית של נושאי הפרקים. פלא יועץ הוא אחד מספרי המוסר היהודיים המפורסמים והנפוצים ביותר.

בשנת 1820 הופיע בקונסטנטינופול ספרו "עיצות רבניות". בשנת 1824 הודפס בסלוניקי הספר "אלף המגן", בשנת 1851 יצא לאור (על ידי בנו), בסלוניקי, הספר "משטר חיים מוסרי" ובשנת 1860 הופיעו בבלגרד "אורח חיים" ו"בית תפילה".

על דמותו הסגפנית של רבי אליעזר פאפו כתב בנו:

"והפליא לענות בצום נפשו, ומלקות בכל לילה ולילה שאומרים בהם תחנונים. שק ואפר וחרולים וטבילות... וטבילת שלגים..."

תלמידו, הרב יהודה בן שלמה חי אלקלעי, ממבשרי הציונות, סיפר שכאשר הקהילה לא רצתה לתרום סכום גדול של כסף כדי לפדות יהודי שהשלטונות רצו לתלותו, אמר להם:

"אני מכריח אתכם שתמכרו את כל ספרי התורה ואת כלי הקודש ותתנו לי את כל הכסף הנמצא בית ה', כי התורה לא ניתנה אלא לישראל, ואם אין ישראל, אין תורה, ולכן אין דבר עומד בפני פיקוח נפש"

סביב דמותו הילכו סיפורי אגדה שקשרו אותו בניסים. כגון: בהגיעו לגיל 24 החל לכהן כאב"ד בסיליסטרה והגיע לעיר בקפיצת הדרך, מותו מדבר בחול המועד סוכות, כ' תשרי, בשנת 1828 נקשר להפסקת המגפה בעיר סיליסטרה.

טרם הסתלקותו בשנת ה'תקפ"ח הודיע כי כל המשתטח על קברו אחר טבילה אמירת תהילים ותפילה בכוונה יפקד בדבר ישועה ורחמים.
