Famous Rabbi, Top student of Chasam Sofer. He is buried in an unlandmarked Orthodox cemetery in Cemetery is located at Brindusei Str., 3765, Marghita,, judet Bihor, Romania. He married Raizel Kalmas (died 10. 14.1862). She was the daughter of David Kalmas (the son of Kalonymus Kalmas). Hillel came from 26 generations Rabanim including the Maggid of Mezritch and Rav Mordechai Yafeh – aka the Levush. The Yafeh or Jaffe family comes from RASHI who comes from Kind david

Hillel Lichtenstein was born at Vécs, Heves county, Hungary (Veča) in 1814 to the dayan R. Baruch Bendit. After studying at the yeshiva of the Chassam Sofer, he married in 1837 the daughter of a well-to-do resident of
Galanta, where he remained until 1850, when he was elected rabbi of Margarethen (Szent Margit). In 1854 he was elected rabbi of Klausenburg, but the opposition of the district rabbi, Avrohom Friedman, made it impossible for him to enter upon the duties of the office; finally he was expelled from Klausenburg by the authorities. Having lived for some time at Nagyvárad, he was recalled to Margarethen, where he remained until about 1865, when he was called to Szikszó. Thence he went, in 1867, to Kolomyia, where he remained until his death.

He was a prominent leader of Haredi Judaism in Hungary: he not only resisted the slightest deviation from the traditional ritual, as the removal of the bimah from the center of the synagogue, but also vigorously denounced the adoption of non-Jewish social manners and dress and the acquisition of secular education. He directed his criticism not only at the reformers, but also at the moderate Orthodox Azriel Hildesheimer. He bitterly opposed the Hungarian Jewish congress of 1868-69 and the establishment of the Neolog rabbinical seminary in Budapest. In 1865 he called a rabbinical convention at Michalovce, which banned reforming synagogues.

His religious practise was unusually strict even among Hungarian Orthodox rabbis, even going so far as to keep a she-donkey in order to be able to fulfill the law of Petter Chamor. He kept a sheep also in order to be able to give the first fleece to a Kohen (Deuteronomy 18:4), from whom subsequently he bought it back to make tzitzit from it. Rabbi Lichtenstein was an ardent admirer of Hasidic Judaism, and made pilgrimages to the famous Rebbe of Sanz, the Divrei Chaim. He offered his own intercession through prayer to people in distress, but declined any gifts. He died on 18 May 1891 in Kolomyia, Galicia (now Ukraine).

אב"ד קאלאמעא

רבי הלל בן רבי ברוך בענדיקט ליכטנשטיין נולד בי"א כסליו תקע"ה בעיר וועטש בהונגריה (כיום סלובקיה) - ונפטר י אייר תרנ"א (1815 - 1891) מגדולי רבני מזרח אירופה במאה ה-19.

רבי הלל למד בפרשבורג, מקום בו אביו, רבי ברוך בנדיקט, היה אב בית הדין הרבני, צאצא ל-26 דורות של רבנים פולנים. הוא למד חמש שנים אצל החת"ם סופר, נישא ב-1837 ושהה בפולין 13 שנים, במהלכן ניהל ישיבה עם 30 לומדים. ב-1850 קיבל משרת רבנות במרגרטן ושנה מאוחר יותר נבחר לרב של קלויזנבורג וכבר אז התבלט בעמידה על עקרונותיו והתנגדות לניאולוגים מה שהביא לסכסוך עם הרב אברהם פרידמן, רב ראשי של טרנסילבניה, שהתלונן אצל השלטונות שלא הוגשה בקשה רשמית מצד קהילת קלויזנבורג למינויו וכתוצאה מכך נאלץ לשוב לקהילתו הקודמת והן עם הרב עזריאל הילדסהיימר שניסה להנהיג דרשות בגרמנית המובנת לקהל המתפללים. לאחר מרגיטה נקרא לכהן כרב בסיקסו (Szikszó) בשנת-1865. ב-1868 נבחר כרבה של קהילת קולומיאה בגליציה, ומכאן כינויו "ר' הלל קולומעייר" (מקולומייא).

ב-1883 היה מיוזמי כנס רבנים בלבוב שבו נוסדה "חברת מחזיקי הדת". התנגד להשתלבות היהודים בתרבות המקומית בגולה ולכן התנגד שיהודים ילמדו את שפת המדינה בה הם גרים. וזאת מתוך הנחה שמשיח יבוא במהרה ויעלה את כל היהודים לארץ ישראל. השקפה זו הייתה בסיס לכנס הרבנים במיכאלוביץ אותו ארגן יחד עם חותנו בו התקבל "פסק דין חקוק בעט עופרת לזיכרון לדורות עולם". סמוך לאותה תקופה נקלע למחלוקת חריפה עם הרבי מוויז'ניץ בנושאי שחיטה.

ליכטנשטיין שלח לחתנו, עקיבא יוסף שלזינגר, סכום כסף שהספיק לרכישת 10 חלקות אדמה בפתח תקווה וייעד אותן לבני משפחתו, אולם כשהבין כי אי תשלום מיסים שנתיים על האדמה יגרום להפקעתה על ידי השלטון העות'מאני, העבירן ליעקב בלומנטל ולרב יוסף חיים זוננפלד, ראשי כולל הונגריה בירושלים, אך לאחר מותו הכולל מכר את נחלתו בניגוד לרצונו ועל אף המחאות התקיפות של חתנו.

והביאני לבית חמי רחים ומוקי רבנן ירא וחרד לבד ה' הקצין החבר ר' דוד קלמס זללה"ה בק"ק גאלאנדע והחזיקני לתורה בעין טובה ובעין יפה רבות בשנים יותר ויותר ממה שהבטיח לי
