Samuel Bowen was the Second Son of Obadiah and Mary Clifton Bowen. He was born in Swansea, (Rehoboth, Bristol Co.) Massachusetts on 16 July 1659. The original farm plot is now located near Warren, Rhode Island. Samuel Bowen was the first of his future descendants to be born in America.

Samuel married, on 26 May 1684, Mrs. Elizabeth Wood Wheaton. She was born around 1662 in Swansea (Rehoboth, Bristol Co.) and had two children, Jonathan and Noah Wheaton by her Marriage to Samuel Wheaton. Samuel and Elizabeth Bowen had 8 children.

Sometime between 12 February 1701 and 30 December 1703, most likely in 1702, Samuel Bowen, his wife, their children, and her two sons Jonathan and Noah, came from Swansea and joined the Baptist Meeting of which Rev. Timothy Brooks was Pastor.

Rev. Timothy Brooks, by deed dated 30 December 1703, sold a tract of land at Bowentown, New Jersey to Samuel Bowen; and on 12 May 1726, the latter conveyed a part of it to his son Dan Bowen.

Other land purchased by Samuel Bowen from the Heirs of George Haslewood was divided by Samuel to his sons, Dr. Elijah and Clifton Bowen. This was the home farm of Mr. Samuel Bowen and adjoined the ancient survey of Joseph Helby. The north part was given to Clifton in the Will of Samuel Bowen. This is the land at the northwest corner of the crossroads at Bowentown and extends northward toward the straight road from Bridgeton to Roadstown.

Samuel Bowen died at Bowentown, Cumberland county (then Salem County), New Jersey on 21 January 1729. He probably was buried in the ground attached to the Brooks Meeting House. Elizabeth died on 4 March 1728.

Per a compilation from John Winskie, Samuel Bowen and his wife Elizabeth (Wood) Wheaton (she was the Widow of his first cousin Samuel Wheaton – son of Alice Bowen and Robert Wheaton) lived in Swansea Plymouth Colony, and in Rhode Island before Moving to Cohansey, New Jersey before 24 February 1702.

He was a Preacher in the Seventh Day Baptist Church and was an Associate in that church with his brother-in-law, the Reverend Timothy Brooks. Bowentown, N. J. is said to have received its name from him.

The editor of the New Jersey Genesis wrote, “From the sons of Samuel and Elizabeth (Wood-Wheaton) Bowen sprung a numerous family by the late 18th Century. It seemed as if all the Bowens in New England had emigrated to Cumberland county, New Jersey.”

Samuel Bowen’s will of 21 January 1728/9 was proved 4 March 1728/9 and Listed his children, John, Dan, Elijah, Clifton, Mary Percy and Elizabeth Fogg. His will referred to him as “Gentleman.” in those days, “Gentleman” was a title, not a courtesy. on the list of titles, it fell just below knight.
