About Rev. Samuel Dudley

Samuel DUDLEY

HUSBAND:

[F3778]. Samuel DUDLEY.

Born in (1610-S?)(30 NOV 1608_S1,S2,S4) at (Northampton-S?)(Canon’s Ashby, Northamptonshire-S4), England; son of Thomas DUDLEY [F7556] and Dorothy YORKE [F7557].

There has been much debate among historians and some genealogists concerning descent of the Massachusetts Dudleys from the famous Barons Dudley of England. Suffice it to say that Rev. Samuel Dudley, oldest son of Thomas, claimed such descent during his lifetime and apparently was not challenged. Furthermore, Thomas Dudley was accustomed to using the arms (seal) of the Barons Dudley to seal legal documents bearing his signature. In fact his will, written with his own hand, was sealed with the Dudley arms, indicating that he was descended from the Sutton-Dudleys of Dudley Castle. It was a serious offense under English law to use arms under false pretenses. (S5).

He married (1) Mary WINTHROP (about 1632-S4)(According to the births of the children they must have married at least by 1633), probably in Boston, Massachusetts, thought in could have been before arriving in New England. The lived in Boston until about 1637. Between 1638 and 1640 the moved to Salisbury, Massachusetts. His wife Mary WINTHROP died between about 1641 and 1643.

He married (2) Mary BYLEY about 1643-1644 at Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.

He married (3) Elizabeth [F3779] in 1651. Their children were born in Exeter, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, so they must have married there, or moved there shortly after they were married.
