Jan. 18, 1836 an owner of Chicago Hydraulic Company (water company); hardware merchant in Chicago; 1850's fur trader west of the Mississippi River; May 2, 1861 maj., paymaster, U. S. Army; 1861-1864 at Washington, D. C. 1864-1868 in New Mexico; from 1868 at Chicago, Ill. March 13, 1865 brevet ltcol., U. S. Army for Civil War service; Dec. 13, 1873 died at Chicago of heart disease and buried in Graceland Cemetery; Children: Frank Kinzie, c.1853 born in Illinois; Walter H.
