About Ruth Cole

Ruth Collier

  • Born before 5 Aug 1627 in Southwark, Surrey, England
  • Daughter of William Collier and Jane (Yates) Collier
  • Wife of Daniel Cole — married 1643 in Swansea, Bristol, Massachusetts
  • Mother of John Cole Sr., Timothy Cole, Hepzibah (Cole) Doane, Ruth Chase (Cole) Bangs, Israel Cole, James Cole Sr., Mary Collier (Cole) Hopkins, Esther (Cole) Atwood, William Cole and Thomas Cole
  • Died 15 Dec 1694 in Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts

Disputed Origins - Resolved

Ruth's origins have been determined. She was a daughter of William Collier.[1]

Previously: See the discussion on Family talk:Daniel Cole and Ruth Chester (1), regarding the inability to identify Ruth. She is sometimes identified as Ruth Chandler, Chester, or Collier. The only evidence supports Collier, but her baptism is not found with those of the other children of William Collier (TAG p. 49:215, and p. 51:58), making it doubtful. Chandler seems disproven by virtue of age and father's will, and no such name as Ruth Chester has been found in appropriate records and no documented evidence has been produced to support it. Obviously, until her parents can be identified, the place of her birth remains a mystery.[1]

While Edmund Chandler did have a daughter Ruth, there is no further record of her after her inclusion in his 1662 will, when she was single.[2]

Family

  • Daniel Cole
  • Birth: Dec. 12, 1614, England
  • Death: Dec. 21, 1694 Eastham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, USA
  • Died at age 80. Unmarked grave. His wife's maiden name MAY have been Collier but other possibilities include Chandler and Chester.
  • From Cole family genealogy:
  • DANIEL appears in the records of Plymouth Colony about 1633 with his brothers, Job and John, as well as John Colier. Daniel was named Freeman 1645 and held several political offices in Yarmouth and Eastham MA. In 1661 he was licensed to retail "wine and strong waters." Daniel married at Plymouth Colony RUTH (unknown). Ruth's maiden name is controversial and some researchers are of the opinion that she was Ruth Collier, a daughter of William Collier; this has not been conclusively proven to be correct. Other researchers are of the opinion that her maiden name was Ruth Chester but with no evidence that this is correct. [SIC: now resolved, she was a Collier]. Ruth was born about 1627; died 15 Dec 1694. Daniel was born about 1614; died at Eastham MA 21 Dec 1694. The estate of Ruth was administered 15 Jan 1695. Both are buried at Eastham Cove Burial Ground, Eastham MA.

  • About the beginning of the second decade of the existence of the Plymouth colony, there came from England three young men, brothers, named John, Job and Daniel Cole. I suspect that they came over with William Collier, a merchant of London, about 1633. Their father is unknown. Whether they were brothers of James, the inn-keeper of Plymouth, I know not, but I judge that they were not.
  • John died at Plymouth in December, 1637, and in his will, proved January 2, 1638, he mentions by name, "Master Collier's men," his brothers Job and Daniel, and his sister Rebecca, wife of Job. He was probably unmarried.
  • JOB COLE, the eldest of the three brothers, married May 16, 1634, Rebecca Collier.*

There is a baptismal record at St Saviour Southwark, Surrey, England for 5 Aug 1627 for "Ruth Collier," daughter of William. This explains the reference in William's will and makes Ruth Collier the most obvious choice as the wife of Daniel Cole.
