biographical notes

Sarah was the 5th child of William & Annis (Agnes) Chandler who immigrated to Massachusetts in1636 with her 4 older siblings. She was the first child in this family to be born here around 1637. She married young to William Cleaves and started her family. William was killed by the Indians in King Philip's War in 1676. She outlived him by more than 35 years. She remarried at least once to Unknown Stevens [see Torrey & comments possibly Ephraim Stevens]. It was once proposed that on October 11, 1688 in Roxbury. She may have also married a Mr. Wilson [see Torrey & comments] however, TAG 80:34-5 says this is not possible. And she married 4th a Mr. George Allen. See TAG 80-34-5 for documentation of each marriage. Some confusion on her origin comes from the fact that she may have had an older sister named Sarah born and died in England roughly a decade before her own birth.

  • April 18, 1675, "Sarah Cleaves, wife of will. Cleaves restored to full communion, penitently confessing."
  • December 13, 1678, (the day Stevens died), "A bill for Widdow Stevens for Ringing the bell & sweeping the meeting house."
  • 1678 "Widow Stevens (alias Cleaves) chosen sexton"
  • 1679[80], "1 1m Widdow Stevens was accepted in her confession."

genealogical notes

An article, Sarah (Chandler) (Cleaves) (Stevens) (Parker) Allen of Roxbury and Sandwich, Massachusetts, by Helen Schatvet Ullmann, which was published in 2005 in the American Genealogist, looked for the first time at the Roxbury Congregational Church records for the marriages and children of Sarah Chandler. Apparently she was married four times and had children with three of her husbands. Ms. Ulman also found evidence concerning the correct names and origins of these husbands.

No documentation has ever been found concerning a claimed marriage to Unknown Wilson.[2] There was a very short time between the death of William Cleaves on April 21, 1676 and the first reference to her as "Widow Stevens (alias Cleaves)" in the Roxbury church in 1678. It is doubtful that she married an unidentified Wilson for her husband during that time.[2]
There is no evidence of a marriage to Ephraim Stevens. There is a 11 October 1680 (not 1688) marriage of Ephraim Stevens to Sarah Abbott in Andover. There is no Stevens-Chandler marriage in Roxbury. All sources for the supposed Chandler-Stevens marriage come from unsourced online trees.
