Simon was made a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1431

__________

This is the most illustrious of the house; for two centuries, the distinguished men it produced shone in the front rank, continuing to make famous the name of Laiaing carried so high by the Good Knight; to write their biography would be to summarize the history of our country under the houses of Burgundy and Austria: for there is not a memorable event in which one of them has not taken part.

SIMON de Lalaing
(3rd son of Otte, lord of Lalaing), lord of Montigny (Sint-Christophe), knight of the Golden Fleece in 1431, chamberlain of the duke, provost-count in Valenciennes (1427-1437), bailiff of Amiens (1441-1449), captain or military governor of L'Ecluse besieged in 1437 by the rebellious Bruges and in 1452, of Audenarde besieged by the Gantois rebels, having been "cause of the saivation of the aforementioned two cities," lieutenant general of the great bastard of Burgundy to the crusade of 1464, adviser of sword to the great council of Malines in 1473.

Born around 1405, most probably in the castle of Lalaing, he had made his first appearance in 1426, against the Turks, in the kingdom of Cyprus, where he earned his knight's spurs; then in France, in 1429, under the Count of Ligny (Jean de Luxembourg), a great supporter of the English alliance.

The tournament of Arras, in February 1429 (old style), completed to put him in evidence, he "who among a thousand knights was found one of the most beautiful and the biggest, man of very noble house too," says Chastellain, in his Chronicle (II, page 20).

As a cadet, he bore a lion of gules in the first lozenge.

He died on March 15, 1476 (old style), and lies in the church of the Augustinians of Deynze in Flanders.

From Jeanne DE GAVRE-Escornaix, whom he married around 1436, he had a numerous posterity:

Josse, who follows.

Arnoul de Lalaing, doctor in theology and rights, provost of Saint-Sauveur of Harlebeke, in 1459, of Notre-Dame of Bruges (from 1473) and of Saint-Lambert of Liége (67) in 1481 (by market made with Jean de Lalaing, his first cousin), of the private council of Charles the Bold and Maximilian of Austria, professor at the university of Louvain, in whose council he had been admitted in 1473, died in this city, on March 21, 1483, lying in the choir of the preaching brothers.

He left a report, written in French, of the meeting of Emperor Frederick III and Duke Charles in Trier in 1473.

Simon de Lalaing, knight, mortally wounded before Paris, towards the end of August 1465, buried at the Saints-Innocents, without child of Marie DE SARS, his wife, whom he had married in 1461, daughter of the late Jean, esquire, and of Marguerite de Barbançon dit “de Donstienne” (account of the great bailliage of Hainaut, October 1, 1460 - September 30, 1461, f°s iiij and xlij).

"In this time Simon de Lalaing, second (68) son of Mr. Simon de Lalaing, lord of Montigny, was captured and taken to Paris. He died the next day and was buried at the Innocents in Paris. He was still young, so he had seen and traveled a great deal, such as to the Holy Sepulchre, to Saint James, to Rome, to the Allemaines and to Turkey" (69). So says the lord of Haynin, knight of Hainaut, who also fought in the army of Charles the Bold (Les Mémoires de messire Jean, seigneur de Haynin, Mons, 1842, in-8°, I, page 46).

Philippe de Lalaing, esquire, who, on March 18, 1453 (v. st.), although being "of the duke's hostel" Philippe le Bon, attended the festival of the Unicorn, given at Cambrai by the count of SaintPol, who was then ill-regarded at court, so much so that the duke had forbidden his people to appear at these jousts (Mathieu d'Escouchy, Chronique, II, page 239). He died of the plague in Marseille, around Christmas 1464, during the crusade of the great bastard of Burgundy.

François de Lalaing, squire, died of the plague and was buried in Marseille, next to his brother. In such a way that the lieutenant of the great bastard/ "messire Simon de Lalaing, lost two beautiful squires, his children: who was a pity, and to dur carried it" (Chastellain, Chronique, V, page 47).

Jean de Lalaing, knight, having been armed by the hand of Duke Charles, at the siege of Neuss in Germany, on May 23, 1475, the day of the battle against the emperor (Molinet, I, page 129). Chamberlain of the duke, captain of an ordinance company, he was killed at the disaster of Granson, against the Swiss, on March 2, 1476 (old style).

Philippotte de Lalaing, canoness of Mons in 1454, married, after 1479, to Jean DE LANNOY, knight, lord of Maingoval, father and mother of the famous Charles de Lannoy, viceroy of Naples, who took the king François I at Pavia.
