U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
William Cash Sr. was a Virginia colonist.
William seems to be the ancestor of all of the CASH families in America. [1]

"WILLIAM CASH, the progenitor of the southern branch of the CASH Family, first appears in the records of Westmoreland County, Virginia, 30 May 1694, on which date he was sworn as a grand juror. It is clear from the evidence, however, on this date he owned a large landed estate, therefore probably arrived in that place some years before. It is believed he came to Virginia ca 1680, and is therefore referred to by most CASH researchers as "The Emigrant". His date of birth is estimated as ca 1660. His plantation was situated in Washington Parish, Westmoreland County, but when King George County was formed from part of Westmoreland in 1720, approximately half of this land fell into each county. His first wife is unknown, however he probably first married ca 1688. His first wife probably died ca 1698 and he was then married ca 1699 to Elizabeth, believed to have been the daughter of his friend and neighbor John SKINNER, a Quaker. He died in Westmoreland County, Virginia between 16 February 1708, the date of his Will, and 25 August 1708, the date of probate." [2]

"1 Jul 1692; Indenture from William Cash and Rebeckah his wife of Westmoreland County, Virginia, to Henry Key, planter; for a certain sum of tobacco; 25 acres part of 100 acres called Posey Lane in possession or Thomas Maris at this decease; now in possession of Henry Key; land belonging to the 4 daus. of Thomas Maris; /s/ William Cash (mark), Rebeckah Cash (mark); wit. There were two Williams as the sons of Caishe-3 but I think there had been a misunderstanding, and I found the following "Research Note" on Ancestry.com, on which basis I have inserted a new brother (Unknown Cash-2174) and made the second William (Cash-61) the nephew of Cash-212 rather than the brother."

Research Notes for William Cash; Posted 02 Oct 2012 by janbeattie: "William CASH , the Immigrant 1 NB This is Cash-61, grandson of Caishe-3 and nephew of Cash-212)

The first known CASH in America was a William Cash from Scotland, [Cash-212] a mariner who settled in Salem, Massachusetts about 1645. On one of his return voyages from England/Scotland on his brigantine "The Good Intent", he brought with him a favorite nephew, son of his brother, who was also named William Cash [the nephew, that is], born in Fife, Scotland in 1653. At his uncle's urging, this younger William Cash [Cash-61] went down into Virginia, settling in Westmoreland County about 1673. This is the William Cash we are descended from. WILLIAM CASH, the nephew (aka The Immigrant), came to Tidewater, Virginia about 1673 and was the first CASH to settle in that colony.

Name: William Cash Surname: Cash Given Name: William Sex: M Birth: 1653 in Strathmiglo, Fife, Scotland Death: 16 Feb 1708 in Westmoreland Co, Virginia

Note:

William Cash who died in 1708, Westmoreland Co. Va. is the progenitor of the Cash line under discussion here. A British tax record in 1677 lists William Cash as "seated" in Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co. Va. He left a will, written 16 February 1708/7, and recorded in Westmoreland Co, 25 August 1708, naming his children: William, Thomas, John, James, Howard, Joseph, Peter, and a daughter, Anise Cash. His wife, Elizabeth was named as executrix and guardian of his children, William, Thomas, Anish, until they became of age. Therefore it is believed all the other children were older than these three whose ages were given in the will. Peter Skinner was named as executor, and John Skinner a witness.

The Cash Family originated in Scotland. The original spelling of the name was not Cash. While some, including the book by the singer Johnny Cash, believe that the original spelling was Caesche, history seems to show that this may not be the case.
Information published by Don Leslie Cash states that current name Cash is derived from "Caschel", which is the gaelic term for Castle. Previous to this, the name was spelled Caiseal. Variations include Casche (ca. 1450), and Casch. By the late 1500's and early 1600's the common name was Cash.
Don Cash believed that the Cash Seat was at "The Place Cash" near Strathmilgo, Fife, Scotland. The name came from the noble family of Duncan, 6th Earl of Fife, and Ada, niece of Malcolm IV, King of Scotland. The lands, which were and still are called "the Lands of Cash, or Casche" (the gaelic term describing a castle or fortress), were granted by Malcolm IV in a dowry charter dated 1160. From Duncan and Ada, it is assumed that a grandson, about 1225, first took the surname Casche, later to be the modern day spelling of Cash. This information is gathered by the martlet (bird) on top of the family crest, which is the cadency mark of the fourth son.
The House of Casche endured for 263 years until James I (James IV of Scotland) returned from bondage in England and had the Earldoms dismantled. In about 1430 the family was dispersed. Some Cash's went to clan country and took the name MacCash and MacCaishe under the Clan MacDonald. Some went to Germany, where it became Kash or Kashe. Others went to Ireland, near Cashel.
William, the originator of the name in America, is of the small branch that stayed behind in the Fife area.
My thanks to the research of Don Leslie Cash, and the information provided by Cristopher D. Cash.

"Records document two William Cash men in Colonial America; one settled in Massachusetts, the other in Virginia. Historical accounts often intermix these two Williams."

Strathmiglo, Scotland

Since the Cash descendents in our family line originate in Virginia, the following version is that William Cash or Caishe, was born to William and Marion Malone Caishe in Strathmiglo, Fife, Scotland in 1853. He was the only child born to this couple. Records list death dates for both parents in the 1660s, which would mean that William was orphaned at seven. Historical writings say that the Caishe family either owned or navigated ships as Captains and that orphaned William Jr. emigrated from Scotland on his Uncle’s ship in 1667, thus the name “mariner.”

Virginia Tidewater Region

Ten years later William first appears on Virginia colonial records when “a British tax record in 1677, lists William Cash as ‘seated’ in Washington Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia.” Evidence of a tax record indicates the likelihood of a land grant for farming. In October of 1677, William marries Elizabeth Skinner in Tidewater, Washington Parish, Colony of Virginia. The English Church organized parishes throughout Virginia under the direction of a minister. The parish was granted land for a church and the minister was given administrative duties. Doubtless William and Elizabeth were married by a minister in a Westmoreland church. The name ‘Tidewater” refers to a geographical region in the eastern portion of the Commonwealth of Virginia, where the water level is affected by the tides. All the communities there were connected by the harbor and waterways. Plantations grew wheat, corn and tobacco in the fertile areas adjacent to those waterways. Ship builders also came to this area because of the abundance of timber and early settlers built grist mills along the rivers and waterfalls.

Elizabeth Skinner

Although Elizabeth was born in Virginia, she was the daughter of Scottish immigrants John Skinner and Elizabeth Taylor, who were also from Strathmiglo, Fife, Scotland, thus William and Elizabeth shared the same hometown. She was born 2 August 1660, in Westmorland, Colony of Virginia. To date, she is the only child listed to this couple, but in her husband’s will he appointed Peter Skinner as an executor, who possibly could be her brother. According to the will of William Cash, Elizabeth and her children were left with a substantial amount of land holdings and financial resources after his death. She lived to be 90 years old, passing away 9 March 1750 in Stafford County, Colony of Virginia. Family in Virginia
The Cash family lived in the same area where George Washington was born and raised. It’s possible that their families knew each other. Two years after their marriage, with a home and land to farm, the Cash’s started their family with the birth of a son James, born to them 2 June 1679. Within the next six years they had three more children; a son John, born in 1681, a son Peter born in 1683, and a son Joseph, born 6 March 1685. All of their children were born there in Westmoreland. There is almost an eight years space between the next four children; their fifth child a daughter Anish, born in 1693, a son Thomas, born in 1697, a son William, born in 1699, and their last son Robert, born in 1703. Sadly, William Cash, Sr. died in August of 1708 when his youngest son was only five. There are many historical records of Cash family descendents in Virginia.
