Mary came to Plymouth Colony as a young nanny for Sarah (Palmer) Rowley and her two children in 1630. Rowley at this time being pregnant with her third child. Mary moved into the home of William Palmer, Sr., when his wife Frances died, as a maid-servant. “On 23 July 1633 a man servant of William Palmer, Sr. named William Mendlone was whipped and discharged for misconduct with the maid servant of said Palmer.”

The mentioned maid servant is probably Trine, and she appears to have been a flirt, and a pleasent girl to look at, being about 20 years old.

Now enters into the picture a story of a closely guarded seceret. During this time New England had a highly moral attitude, and premarital sex, although it did happen, was deeply frowned upon, which brought public punishment and censor. One day young William Palmer, Jr., about age 20, and engaged to Elizabeth Hodgkins, found himself alone with a flirting maid servant, resulting in her getting pregnant. To protect his son’s future marriage and reputation, he offered to marry Mary Trine. William, Sr., appear’s to have confided in his neighbor, Robert Paddock, who was also a close friend.

The plan purposed by Palmer for his young wife was that he would disown the coming child on moral grounds, but he would supploy support money to have the child raised. Mary would inherit a good share of his estate. To son, William, Jr., went a grant of land as a future estate settlement along with a sizeable gift of cash. Soon after William, Jr., was married, Mary gave birth to a boy on 27 June 1634 (or 1638), named William Palmer, Jr. As far as the town folks were concerned, the child belonged to William, Sr., and his wife Mary. Unfortuneately two years later young William Palmer, Jr., died.

Mary feigned being to sick to care for the child, and the boy was raised by the next-door neighbor, the Paddock’s, who were paid for the child’s upbringing.

Old Palmer left a Will, and he died in November 1637, about age 62. In the Will there is mention of his second marriage: “. . . I have marryed a ‘yeong woman’ who is deare unto me, I desire that she have not less than one-third of my estate, and, if in case she be with child then that one other third be preserved and improved ---for that child as mine heir.” He also stipulated “wife should be ruled by her ‘auncent” (guardian), Edward Winslow.” In the inventory of his estate there is mention of “. . . goodwife Paddock, for the child, one pound, 5 shillings, 2 pence.” The amount being what was currently due to the Paddock’s. This amount wasn’t collected by Robert Paddock until nine years later when he was constable.
