About William Woody, Sr.
Name Suffix: Sr.
William entered America by way of Canada. He fought in the French and Indian War. He was in the 1776 Surry County, NC Tax List.
William and Sarah Many researchers believe that William Woody and his wife Sarah immigrated to Virginia in 1750, which is based on the writings of William Coffee Berry. Family tradition in North Georgia has a different story from Mr. Berry that has been handed down from generation to generation. It tells the story of William landing in Canada and then moving to Maryland and then Virginia. According to tradition, he married Sarah Purcell/ Pershall/Percel in Virginia.
The Pershall family were Quakers who settled New York, Maryland, and Virginia. One group of Purcells moved to Edgecombe, North Carolina. They were tobacco and woolen traders and William ,being a Quaker and a weaver, had business dealing with them. Sarah was not of nobility with a title, but she was a lady, much as one would say, the man was a gentleman. What ever story is correct, records show that William and Sarah were living in Bedford County, Virginia in 1750. Two sons, James and William, were born here and state this in their war records. W C Berry alleges they lived on the Potomac River but so far no records have been found there of William. There are several William Woody's in Bedford County with one being the son of Henry Woody. DNA has proven the two families were of no relations. There is also a William Woody who fought in the French and Indian War and received payment for his service in Bedford, Co Virginia. It will take some research to straighten out the different William Woody's.
Contrary to the Berry papers, William Woody did not move from Va. to South Carolina, but lived for several years in North Carolina. They lived first in Surry County ,where Jonathan was born, and later orange County North Carolina. It is not know if William died in North or South Carolina, but his wife is in the 1800 Greenville Co census as a widow.
William Woody's connections to Canada is seen in the naming of canada as a District in Union County, Georgia. According to early historians of Union County, the Woody's were among the first settlers of the community of Suches. It is said that William and his son chose the name Canada for the district and Quebec for the post office because the plants, land and climate reminded them of William's description of Canada. It was also believed that Jonathan had at one tiime also traveled in canada.
An earlier researcher once wrote," Traditions can get a little mixed up but they can never be ignored."
The first William Woody was said to be born in Kent, England, about 1724. He married Sara Persel, said to be of Irish royalty. They settled in Bedford County, Virginia. Of their several children William married Elizabeth Lovel and Jonathan married her sister Mary.
