About Winnifred Marie ‘Winney’ Goddard
Biography
Winnie Tidwell was born about 1799 in South Carolina, [1] the daughter of "Old John" Tidwell and his wife, Celia (a white couple). In 1815 she had son known as "John Tidwell" with a Cherokee man named Young Deer. She and three of her sisters had children by Cherokee men.[2] Winnie married a Revolutionary War veteran named John Goddard in 1818. [3] They had an adopted son known as Jefferson Goddard (believed to be the son of Winnie's sister Sally) [4] and several children of their own. [5] The 1850 census shows a widowed Winnie with one son, thirteen-year-old Peter. [1] Her death date is uncertain. Winnie received pension payments as John's widow; [3] the pension payment roll last records a payment in March, 1860 but does not show a death date. [6]
