  • Alexander Alvord removed from Windsor to Northampton about 1661.
  • His older children were born in Windsor, and the last four can be found in the Northampton VR's.

Note that the date of his marriage (in Savage) differs from the actual VR's of Windsor by three years.

Trumbull, in his "History of Northampton" states: "The other buildings burned at this time, all of which were without the line of palisades, were those of Alexander Alvord, who probably lived in the vicinity of what is now known as Pomeroy Terrace."

Trumbull is referring to the Indian raid on Northampton in 1676, during the course of King Philip's War.

Alexander Alvord received a grant of land within the fortress to replace his burned house. It was located along Hawley Street. Inexplicably, his son John, who owned no land prior to the raid, was also granted a home lot at this time, but this may have been coincidental.

Alvord or Alford

Samuel Morgan Alvord explains in his genealogy that the Alvord spelling seems to have been adopted after his removal to Northampton, Mass. He uses it exclusively in his book, and we will honor that here for descendants of Alexander.

Morgan Alvord concludes that Alexander, Benedict and Joanna were siblings and that they came to America probably as minors and perhaps as orphans about the years 1636-40.
