Tracing the Colchester 'Dutch'

EN : This project is an attempt to bring together the 'Dutch' families (and their descendants) who came to Colchester and made it one of the most prosperous English towns around 1600. In 1565, queen Elisabeth I granted a right to the 'Dutch', allowing them to settle in Colchester. These 'Dutch' were weavers who emigrated from Flanders to escape religious prosecution. By the year 1575, they already numbered more than 500 settlers. Many descendants seem to have emigrated later to Holland - and to Leiden in particular. Today, the 'Dutch Quarter' is a historical landmark in the town centre of Colchester.

NL : In dit project willen we 'Dutch' families van Colchester EN hun nakomelingen samenbrengen. Rond 1600 maakten deze 'Dutch' de stad tot één van de welvarendste in Engeland. In 1565 vaardigde koningin Elisabeth I een edict uit waarin ze de 'Dutch' vrije vestiging in Colchester toestond. Dat waren met name wevers die uit Vlaanderen wegtrokken om te ontsnappen aan religieuze vervolging. In 1575 waren er al meer dan 500 Vlaamse inwijkelingen in Colchester. Veel van deze Vlamingen blijken later van Colchester naar Holland, en meer bepaald Leiden te zijn vertrokken. Vandaag de dag is de 'Dutch Quarter' een historisch monument in het hartje van de Colchester.

FR : Dans le cadre de ce projet, nous voulons de familles 'Hollandais' de Colchester et rassemblent leur progéniture. Autour de 1600 fait cette 'hollandais' de la ville dans l'une des plus riches en Angleterre. La Reine Elizabeth, j'ai publié un édit en 1565 qu'ils ont autorisé la 'Néerlandaise' liberté d'établissement à Colchester. Qui ont été particulièrement les tisserands qui a quitté la Flandre pour fuir les persécutions religieuses. En 1575, il y avait déjà plus de 500 colons flamands à Colchester. Beaucoup de ces flamands prouvent en Hollande et plus tard de Colchester, en particulier à plomb ont quitté.
