  • 1) Several enteries on the internet state that Jacob Emery of Sussex county New Jersey - that parents were George Emery and Johannah [-?-] and now some are placing them "of New York" BUT there is no possible way for this to be true, as the George in question died at least 3 years before Jacob was born.
  • 2) Regarding the Emery family of Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts - there have been several claiming that he is connectect to James Emery and Ruth Watson and especially through their son Jonathan Emery who married Jershua Barron their lineage starts here
  • 2a) There is no proof that Jacob was born in Sandyston, NJ. There are no physical documents to support that.

A) There is a KNOWN tie to a child of Jonathan and Jerusha. David their son served in Morristown as one of Washington's body guards. He was there during the same time period Jacob showed up. He was discharged from service there.

  • 4) his lineage starts hereace of birth of Jacob Emery 1759
  • 5) - A family Bible existed at one time - Does it still exist? is it in tact with the title page of the Bible and ink and handwriting varied proving entries were made at the time of or near the event. this notation was found in a family tree file on ancestry.com:

The identity of George and Johannah as the parents of Jacob Emery is based mainly on information found in a hand written copy of Jacob Emery's bible record, furnished by Wilma C. Myrehn; a very interesting note here is that Theresa Marie Emery Armiger spoke to Wilma Meyrhen on 15 Jul 2012 she told her that:

'She does not have, nor has she seen a copy of any Emery bible --- Why does someone have to manufacture, give and perpetuate false documentation; and involve another person in the process????? - some of this false information has been going around for 30+ years now!

  • 6) Jacob arrives in sussex county new Jersey about 1778 - this would put him at about the age of 18 or 19 - Theresa Marie Emery Armiger writes:

He shows up in NJ in about 1778. I have spoken to the town historian of Sandsyston, NJ. Patte Frato, historian of Sandyston, NJ thinks it may be possible that he came there just after the war with a friend, Even Beavens. Theresa has researched cemeteries in the area and there are no Emerys before Jacob arrived. There are no documents supporting this.

BIGGEST Questions

IF Jonathan Emery and Jershua Barron are the parents of Jacob Emery of Sussex
county New Jersey are :

  • 1) Why did they travel all the way from either Massachusetts or Maine to have only one child?
'''Answer) They did not. It is very likely that Jacob's service took him there, as a soldier.'''

*2) I Jacob Emery of Sussex county New jersey is the son of Jonathan Emery and Jersusha Barron - then WHY did they choose to abandoned this chiild in Sussex county New Jersey - - keeping the remainder of their children and returning to Massachusetts or maine?

Answer) They did not. There is no proof of his place of birth. He may have shown up in N.J. during the war. David Emery son of Jonathan served there in the war and returned. Jacob married Elizabeth Ross of Morristown and probably stayed behind to raise a family. "Maybe"

****1 )Above statements about Jacob being born in Sussex county ARE NOT PROVEN and no one is claiming he was born there. The most logical reason is that he showed up in Jersey during the Revolutionary War. Morristown was the headquarters of George Washington. David Emery and Ambrose Emery both served there in that time period.

Children of of Jonathan Emery and Jershua Barron birth dates and places were:

  • ......1 David Emery was born 29 Sep 1754 in Dracut, Essex, Massachusetts.

New Jersey - Massachusetts Emery Connection Speculation

Note: Appears there may be SOME SPECULATION involved in the relationship between Jacob Emery of Sussex New Jersey and the Massachusetts Emery's by John Addison Biles thought this ancestry was correct, perhaps based on it being documented on page 616 of Volume II of Northern Pennsylvania History.

Copied by J.A. Biles from the Genealogical and Personal History of Northern Pennsylvania, Volume II, page 616, authored by John W. Jordon, L.L.D., Librarian of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania

AND NOTE THE ONLY PROBLEM with this entry is that James Emery son of Jonathan Emery & Mary Woodman who married Ruth Watson and was of Newbury, Haverhill and went to Darcut DID NOT HAVE A SON NAMED JACOB This may be because many churches were burned during the Revolutionary War and were destroyed. - his family data is below -

THEORY

There is to be DNA matching to both Jonathan Emery & Jerusha Emery

  1. Jacob Emery (1759-1824) os Sussex county New Jersey was not born in Sandyston. There is no proof.
  2. Jacobs first born is named Jonathan Emery.
  3. Jacob first shows up in Morristown in 1778 to fight the war.
  4. Pvt David Emery, son of Jonathan Emery & Jershua Barron's son also shows up in Morristown in 1778 to fight the war alongside Washington
  5. Jacob named another son David Emery

Jacob & Elizabeth parents of: Joanna Emery; Experience Emery; Nathan Emery; George Emery; Luther Emery; David Emery; Jacob Ross Emery; Hannah Emery; Jonathan Emery; Sarah Emery; Abner Emery; Susannah Emery and Mary Emery

Jonathan & Jersua parents of of Pvt David Emery; Jershua Emery; Hannah Emery; John Emery; James Emery; Briggs Hollowell Emery, (1767-1840); Jones Emery; Samuel Emery; Thankful Emery and Rachel Durrell (Emery)

Jonathan son of James & Ruth Watson) Brother of Moses Emery, (1719-1725); David Emery; Ezekiel Emery; Anthony Emery; Mary Emery; James Emery, Jr.; Moses Emery, (1731-); Ruth Emery; John Emery; Ambrose Emery; Nathaniel Emery and Edward Emery

James (son of Jonathan & Mary Woodman) Brother of Mary Cole (Emery); John Emery; Jonathan Emery; David Emery; Anthony Emery; Sarah Berry (Emery); Stephen Emery and Edward Emery

Jonathan Emery (m Mary Woodman) son of John Emery & Mary (Shatswell) Webster

John Emery & Alice Grantham had: Alice Chater (Emery); Eleanor Bailey (Emery); John Emery; Ann Ordway (Emery); Daughter Emery; and Ebenezer Hoag (Emery); John Emery & Mary (Shatswell) Webster had: Jonathan Emery

Jersua Sister of John Barron; Hannah Baron; Mary Barron; Eliseus Barron; Sarah Barron; and Lydia Barron

The name Jacob - does not run in Jersuha's branch of Barron's nor does it run in the branch of Jonathan's Emery's as briefly seen above

NOTE:

I am a proven descendant of Jacob Emery of Sussex county New Jersey. I have taken the Ancestry DNA test. My heritage is 70% English, 20% Irish and less than 10 % German.
I performed a search of my 60,000 + DNA matches and in that search used the criteria SURNAMES IN MATCHES TREES I entered the name Barron In the space PLACE OF BIRTH I entered Massachusetts, USA.
The result I got was many matches to trees with the Family of Jerusha Barron in them. I researched each eliminating any that may have other connections such as a maternal match or to any other surnames in my tree. I did not count those that had Jacob in them because I deemed them contaminated by false trees of his. I know that this is using Autosomal DNA but the numbers were to the quantity that makes me wonder. I know it is not proof. Just one more clue.
I traced my Harris tree back and there is no connection to Lydia Barron. Although I do have 1 match to Lydia when searching the name Harris but I have no others to the Harris family that she married into. So saying my connection to the Barron family may come from Lydias husband is a stretch and also misleading since I have many matches to the Barrons of Dracut Mass. and none to Harris family except through Lydia. If that person has proof show it...Frank Emery

NOTE: Since I have made the above statement I have taken the Y-DNA test with Family Tree and have an Emery match who is related to a George Emery 1789 of Dedham Mass. Getting closer...Frank Emery

Note:

NOTE: statement has been made about the DNA matching " All my matches I used were not of the Jacob Emery Line. I tossed them out because their trees are contaminated. Most did not have Jonathan in them. All my Barrons were dated back to early family and were direct family to Jerusha. ... I mean most of the Barron matches didn't have Jonathan in them." The lineage in question is:

  • * John H Harris (ancestry Unknown) and Cheralda Benson Note also some have a 2nd wife Shirley Harris (born Campbell)
  • * William Straten Harris and Agnes M Harris (Young)
  • * Sarah Edna Emery (Harris) and George Dewey Emery (descendant of Jacob EMery of Sussex county New Jersey and of interesting note is that:
  • * Lydia Harris
  • * Birth: January 01, 1734 Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts
  • * Death: August 20, 1830 (96) Lewiston, Lincoln County, Maine, United States
  • * Immediate Family:
  • * Daughter of John Barron and Hannah Barron (Richardson)
  • * Wife of Lawrence (Larrans) Jackson Harris
  • * Mother of Mary Mary Harris; Deborah Harris; Lydia Barron Harris; Abner Harris; John Harris and 8 others
  • * Sister of John Barron; Hannah Jones (Barron); Mary Colburn (Barron); Anne Fox (Wissler); Elisus / Eliseus Barron; Sarah Barron
  • * and Jerusha Emery
    • ** There is NO PROVEN connection of Sara (Harris) Emery and Lawrence Jackson Harris who married Lydia Emery. It is only a theory based on ZERO facts. The name Harris is a common name that can be found in almost any tree.

Descendants of George Emery

First Generation

1. George1 Emery(1) birth date unknown. He married Johannah.

George Emery and Johannah had the following child:

+ 2 i. Jacob2 Emery was born October 11, 1759.(2)

Second Generation

2. Jacob2 Emery (George1)(3) was born in Sussex or Essex Co, NJ October 11, 1759.(4)

Jacob may have been born in Morris Co, NJ. His birth date is recorded as 1760 in a copy of a family bible according to the notes of Calvin Emery. According to Barbara Hoskins, he was probably born in Essex County, NJ. Jacob died April 21, 1824 in Sussex Co, NJ, at 64 years of age.(5)

According to Calvin Emery's notes, "Sussex Co Records, GD p 85. Transfer from George Emery and wife to Wm Myers, for wife Mary, dau of Jacob Emery, dec, says he was "of Delaware, Pike Co, PA" Letter from John Biles says he died in Sandyston Township, near where he is buried."

His body was interred in Sandyston Twp., Sussex Co, NJ, Mettler Cemetery.(6)

He married twice. He married Elizabeth Ross March 2, 1778.(7) Elizabeth was born in Probably Morris Co, NJ October 5, 1761.(8)

According to information copied by Calvin Emery from Jacob Emery's Bible by his son, David, Elizabeth was born on 5 September 1763. She was the daughter of David Ross and Experience. Elizabeth died April 15, 1815 in Sussex Co, NJ, at 53 years of age.(9) Her body was interred in Sandyston Twp., Sussex Co, NJ, Mettler Cemetery.(10)

He married Mary Rupert in Newton, Sussex Co, NJ, September 25, 1817.(11) Marriage date of Mary and Jacob is according to the Court Records, Newton, Sussex Co, NJ, BAP 207. Mary Rupert was married by Rev. Joseph Campbell. She may have remarried soon after Jacob Emery's death. According to the land records (Bk D3, page 84, April 4, 1825), Mary Shay, formerly Mary Emery, of Sandyston, Sussex County, transferred lands formerly belonging to Jacob Emery, to Joseph Fleming (husband of Elizabeth Shay, grandaughter of Jacob Emery).

Mary is listed as "Mary Rubert" in the Case book of marriages. Jacob married Elizabeth Ross first, and Mary Rupert second.

Jacob's parents are George and Johannah Emery. (according to the notes of Calvin Emery). Calvin was incorrect.

Jacob's inventory of his estate was recorded in the Sussex County Records in PB 1824 on page 01772. His inventory was taken on April 30, 1824 and proved on April 30, 1824. The administrators were Luther Clark and Jonathan Emery. The appraisers were John Layton and Aaron Clark.

Jacob was a soldier. He served in the War of Revolution and possibley the War of 1812. According to the PA Archives, page 411, 428, New Jersey Men who served in the War with Great Britain, 1812-1815, page 83. "Emery, Jacob. Served as a private in Morris Co., N.J. militia (S-584) Probably born in Essex Co.; he and his wife Elizabeth baptized in and became members of First Presbyterian Church, Morristown, N.J., 1782." (See, "Men from Morris Co, NJ who served in the American Revolution", compiled by Barbara Hoskins, published by the library of Morristown, NJ, (1979), page 63.) Jacob saw service in the War of Revolution from 1778-1781 in Capt. Alexander Forseman's company, Col. Jacob Stroud's PA Regt, and in the Morris Co, NJ Militia. (It is possible he served in the War of 1812 as a Private in Capt. Alexander Reading's Company of Infantry, Second Regt NJ Detailed Militia, Sussex Co, from Sept. 8, 1814 to Dec. 5, 1814 - although this would mean he was well into his fifties when he enlisted.)

States an historical talk starting with the arrival in America of John Emery from England and outlining the activities of the emery family to the present -

On 15 June 1913 [John A. Biles] took dinner with Hannah Higley, (Hannah Elizabeth "Eliza" Higley) a daughter of Nathan Emery, a cabinetmaker and undertaker, son of Jacob Emery, Silver Lake, Pennsylvania. Being her 87th birthday in company of Nathan Emery and family. She thinks that Irvine Emery of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has the Nathan Emery family Bible and records. Her grandfather, Jacob Emery, lived near Centerville, N.J. Mrs. Higley was in Florida from 1875 to 1902. Tradition as told by Mrs. Higley: three Emery brothers came from England, one of them died on the way. She thinks her grandfather was one of them. He gave the lot at Centerville for a Church - also a mortgage of $1,000 on the James Decker farm, the interest to support the church and to use 100 years.

Fact we do know that John and Anthony Emery (brothers) came to America together with their families. On the Ship James in 1635 the list per Emery's here - http://www.emery.research.pasttracker.com/john-anthony_000preface/p....
The above story of Hanna (Emery) Higley is very plausible. She lived in Grand Rapids at the time that Ervine Emery did. Being a granddaughter of Jacob the story she told would be less likely to have changed in just 2 generations. It would explain why there are no birth records for Jacob. So possibly Jacob migrated here in the 1760's. .
It is said that George Emery was born 1609 in Romsey, Hampshire, England.m. _ He died 20 Feb 1686/7 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. Apparently, their brother, George, born 1609, who came to America in 1636, married a lady named Mary but I can't find any record of them having children. They are both buried in Salem, Mass He is accounted for in that:

Other Salem physicans were George Emery who settled in the town in 1636 and sat on the gallows with a rope around his neck in 1668, for an unnatural crime. Everyday Life in the Massachusetts Bay Colony (1935, Reprint 1988) Dover Publishers, NY. George Francis Dow. The following entry from the records of Rev. S. Danforth of Roxbury, Ma. for the date 5 Sep. 1668, recorded in New England Historic Genealogical Register (1880, 34:299) probably refers to the incident and implies the crime. One of Salem was Executed for murdering her child born in fornication. Doctor Emery & ye mother of ye woman sat upon ye Gallows an Hour. Quarterly Courts of Essex co. Massachusetts Vol. 1- VIII Essex Institute, Salem, Ma. 1911-21 is found that he was punished for public drunkeness a least eight times between 1667 and 1674 and forcursing and swearing in 1679.

other Siblings of John and Anthony EMery are given as:

Ellin Emery was christened 7 Sep 1602 in Romsey, Hampshire, England.
Hugh Emery was christened 6 Oct 1604 in Romsey, Hampshire, England.
Margary Emery was born 1610 in Romsey, Hampshire, England and was christened 14 Sep 1610. She died 14 Sep 1610 (1614)in Romsey, Hampshire, England.
Edward Emery was born about 1612 in Romsey, Hampshire, England. He died before 30 Oct 1637 and was buried in Mary at Rooting, Essex, England.
Helena Emery was born 7 Nov 1624 in Romsey, Hampshire, England and was christened 7 Nov 1624 in Romsey, Hampshire, England

The Theory below is not possible or logical because the decedents of Jacob Emery, Sussex New Jersey are of English decent.

YET NOT PROVEN:

1. Conrad Emery was born in , , Germany. He died before 3 Jun 1757 in Presumably Lebanon, Hunterdon, New Jersey. Conrad married Margreth. They had the following children:

  • 2 Margaret Emery was born about 1733 in Presumably Hunterdon, New Jersey.
  • 3 Anna Elizabeth Emery was born about 1735 in Presumably Hunterdon, New Jersey.
  • 4 Jacob Emery was born about 1737 in Presumably Hunterdon, New Jersey. Jacob married Eva Gertrude about 1758.
  • 5 Peter Emery was born about 1739 in Presumably Hunterdon, New Jersey. He died about Apr 1798 in Presumably Lebanon Township, Hunterdon, New Jersey. Peter married Catherine Apgar, daughter of Johannes Peter Apgar, on 1760. Catherine was born about 1743 in , , New Jersey. She died 1814 and was buried in Presumably, Old Cemetery of the Reformed Church, Lebanon, Hunterdon, new Jersey.
  • 6 John Emery was born 1 Jan 1742 in Presumably Hunterdon, New Jersey. He died 13 May 1814 and was buried in Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Pain Grove, , Pennsylvania. John married Mary Reed on 28 Nov 1765 in Lebanon, Hunterdon, New Jersey. Mary was born 22 Dec 1743. She died 1807 in Presumabley, Bedford, Pennsylvania.
  • 7 Henry Emery was born about 1743 in Presumably Hunterdon, New Jersey. He died about 8 Apr 1816 in Lebanon Twp., Hunterdon, New Jersey. Henry married Anna Lomason or Lomerson on 9 Sep 1763 in , Hunterdon, New Jersey.
  • 8 Catherine Emery was born about 1747 in Presumably Hunterdon, New Jersey.
  • 9 William Emery was born about 1750 in Presumably Hunterdon, New Jersey. William married Hannah Rose, daughter of John Rose and Mercy, on 11 Dec 1773 in Presumably, Sussex, New Jersey. Hannah was born about 1757 in , Morris or Hunterdon, New Jersey. She died Aug 1834 and was buried in Pottsgrove Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Chillisquague, Northumberland, Pennsylvania.

Many of this branch -

  • 1) Will not consider this possible connection
  • 2) or have overlooked the possibility of this family entirely

3) DNA of direct decedents of Jacob Emery of Sussex county New Jersey ARE NOT of German decent they are proven to be English so above theory is FALSE
