Elvis Presley

On June 7, 1982, Graceland, the former home of legendary musician Elvis Presley, was opened to the public. Referred to as the “King of Rock and Roll,” Presley revolutionized the music industry and is perhaps one of the most important cultural icons of the 20th century. He has been inducted to four music halls of fame, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

In 1935, Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi to Vernon and Gladys Presley. His twin brother, Jesse, was stillborn. He was born in his two bedroom shotgun house, built by his father. His parents were married at a young age, his father was 17 and his mother was 21.

Gladys’s sister, Clettes, went on to marry Vernon’s brother, Vester.

Interestingly, Elvis Presley’s third great grandmother, Morning Dove White, was Cherokee.

In 1967, Elvis married actress Pricilla Wagner.  They had one daughter, singer Lisa Marie Presley.  Pricilla played a key role in turning Graceland into a multi-million dollar tourist attraction.
