F. Scott Fitzgerald

F. Scott Fitzgerald is regarded as one of the greatest American authors of the 20th century. Along with writers Ernest Hemingway and T.S. Eliot, he was considered a member of the “Lost Generation,” the 1920s expatriate community in post-war Paris. In 1925, Fitzgerald published his most famous novel, The Great Gatsby, which is still widely read today.

Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896 in Saint Paul Minnesota. He was named after his famous second cousin three times removed, Francis Scott Key, author of the United States’s national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.” His father was Edward Fitzgerald, a Southern salesman, and his mother, Mary McQuillan, was the daughter of a wealthy grocer.

In 1920, Fitzgerald married American novelist Zelda Sayre. After the success of his first novel, This Side of Paradise, the Fitzgeralds were noted as the embodiments of the Jazz Age – young, rich and famous. Zelda was dubbed “the first American Flapper” by her husband.

Together, they had one daughter, Frances Scott “Scottie” Fitzgerald. She followed in her parents footsteps and became a writer and journalist.
