Look Who’s Related: Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant

One of the best aspects of having the world family tree is that we can find how many, many people are related to each other. With this year being the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, I think it is a good opportunity to show how people on completely opposite sides of the war were related.

Let’s start with General Grant and General Lee. These two Generals went head to head for the fate of the United States, but did you know that they are comparatively closely related?

Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President of the USA is General Robert E. Lee's 11th cousin once removed.

Even closer are President Lincoln and General Lee. It really is astounding how closely related we all are.

Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the USA is General Robert E. Lee's 8th cousin once removed.

The world family tree is truly great, but nothing is ever perfect. If you’d like to make our paths even better with sourced information, please feel free to jump in, and help out with our US Civil War Project.
