Mark Zuckerberg Welcomes a Baby Girl, Max

Congratulations to new parents Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan! The couple recently announced the birth of their daughter, Max, on Zuckerberg’s Facebook page. Maxima Chan Zuckerberg was born last week and was a healthy seven pounds, eight ounces.

In a moving letter to their daughter, the happy parents expressed the joy they share for her arrival and their hopes for her future to live in a better world than today. To help make their desire a reality, the Facebook founder and CEO has pledged 99% of his Facebook shares, valued at $45 billion, to fulfill his mission to build a better world for the next generation.

In celebration of her birth, here are some interesting things to know about little Max’s family:

1. Max is of mixed heritage. Her father grew up in Dobbs Ferry, New York in a Jewish household, while her mother is the daughter of Chinese-Vietnamese refugees. Chan’s parents left their homeland on refugee boats in the hopes of seeking a better future in America.

2. Her parents are really smart and met while students at Harvard. After graduating from the elite Phillips Exeter Academy, Zuckerberg enrolled in Harvard University. As many know, it was in his college dormitory that he first launched Facebook, then known as Thefacebook. He left school to pursue his burgeoning business full time. Chan was valedictorian of her high school and was voted “class genius” by her classmates. She became the first generation of her family to graduate from college in 2007. Today, in addition to her philanthropic work, Chan also works as a pediatrician.

The couple met while waiting in line for the bathroom at a frat party at Harvard. They dated for nearly a decade before marrying on May 19, 2012, a day after Facebook launched in the stock market.

3. They can speak multiple languages. Zuckerberg can read and write in French, Hebrew, Latin and ancient Greek. He has also started learning Mandarin. Chan grew up speaking Cantonese at home, and often acted as a translator for her grandparents. She learned Spanish during college after realizing it would help her better connect with her patients. What languages do you think little Max will pick up?

4. Max has a rare name. There aren’t many people out there with the name Maxima or Max. According to the Social Security Administration, only 14 girls were named Max in 2014. Looking back ten years to 2005, and there were just 7 girls named Max. Will we see an increase in girls named Max in the coming year?

5. Her parents have created the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to help make their dreams of a better world a reality. The Initiative will support causes particularly in the areas of health, education and community. Shortly before Max was born, her parents created this video to reflect and record their hopes for their daughter and all children of her generation.
