Alan Alda

Happy birthday to Alan Alda! Today the M*A*S*H star turns 83.

The actor was born Alphonso Joseph D’Abruzzo on January 28, 1936 in New York City, New York. His father was an actor and performed under the name “Robert Alda.” Before becoming an actor himself, Alda served in the United States Army Reserve and did a six month tour in Korea.

Alda began his career on the stage and earned his first Tony Award nomination in 1966. In 1972, he landed the most memorable role of his career, Hawkeye Pierce, on the hit show, M*A*S*H. During the show’s run, Alda was nominated for 21 Emmy Awards and won 5. He is the only person to have received an Emmy for acting, writing, and directing for the same program.

He has continued to make many memorable appearances on television and film and earned his first Oscar nomination in 2005 for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Aviator. Most recently, just a day before his 83rd birthday, Alda received the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of his achievements throughout his long career.
