This Saturday, June 23, marks the 100th anniversary of visionary computer scientist Alan Turing‘s birthday. Born in London, England in 1912, Turing studied mathematics at Cambridge University. During World War II, Turing played a vital role in deciphering the messages encrypted by the German’s Enigma machine, providing vital intelligence for the Allies. He would later change the world with the invention of modern computers and become known as the father of artificial intelligence. Despite his ingenious breakthroughs, in 1952 Turing was arrested and tried for homosexuality, which at the time was illegal. To avoid a prison sentence, he was subjected to injections to reduce his libido. Considered a security risk, his clearance was removed, which barred him from continuing his work. He committed suicide on June 7, 1954.
