Profile of the Day: Anne Frank

Anne Frank

Today we remember Anne Frank on what would have been her 88th birthday.

It was 75 years ago today that Anne received her famous diary as a gift for her 13th birthday. Her father had given it to her after she had pointed it out in a store window days before. The red checkered autograph book had a small lock on the front, so Anne decided to use it as her diary. She began to write in it almost immediately. After her family went into hiding in the small annex of the building where her father worked, Anne continued to record all of her experiences, thoughts, and desires in her diary. The family remained in hiding for two years before they were discovered and taken to a Nazi concentration camp.

Sadly, only her father, Otto Frank, would survive his internment. When the pages of her diary were returned to him, Otto Frank was moved to publish her words, remembering his daughter’s desire to one day become an author. In 1947, he published her diary and since then, the book has been translated into over 70 languages. With millions of copies sold worldwide, her diary continues to inspire and move future generations.
