Profile of the Day: Archduke Franz Ferdinand
On June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie were assassinated by a Serbian nationalist during an official visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia. His assassination sparked the outbreak of World War I, thus beginning one of the most devastating wars in human history. Five years to the day after his death, the Treaty of Versailles was signed, officially marking the end of the war.
